Columbia High School (CHS) is a four-year public high school located in Lake City, Florida. The school's mascot is the Fighting Tigers and the colors are purple and gold. History The school was founded in 1888. The Columbia County High School, 1921 building, which was replaced in 1957 by a new building on Duval street, is on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1935 the school was accused of cheating in football by playing a 21 year old student who lived outside the county. A judge ordered them to be suspended from the Athletic Association and cancelled the rest of their games. Censorship In 1986, despite opposition from the ACLU, the school district banned Chaucer's ''The Miller's Tale'' and Aristophanes ''Lysistrata'' from the school because of sexual content. This decision was ultimately upheld by the courts in 1989 in the case ''Virgil v. School Board of Columbia County''. Lake City is a city in northern Florida. It is the county seat of Columbia County, Florida, United States. As of the 2020 census, the city's population was 12,329. It is the principal city of the Lake City Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is composed of Columbia County, and had a 2010 population of 67,531. Lake City is 60 miles west of Jacksonville. Lake City began as the town of Alligator in 1821 near the Seminole settlement known as Alligator Village. Alligator became the seat of Columbia County in 1832 when it was formed from Duval and Alachua counties. In 1858 Alligator was incorporated and renamed Lake City. The largest American Civil War battle in Florida took place near here in the Battle of Olustee in 1864; the Confederates won. Brian Lamar Allen (born April 1, 1978) is a former American football linebacker who played four seasons in the National Football League. Allen played college football at Florida State University. High school career A native of Lake City, Florida, Allen attended Columbia High School, where he played linebacker and was an honor student as a senior. In his senior season, he recorded 159 tackles and 5.5 sacks, and also picked off four passes and returned three for scores. Allen was named third-team all-state Class 6A, and was looking forward to a scholarship offer by University of Florida in Gainesville, just down the Interstate 75 from Lake City. However, he was not recruited by the Gators, and eventually chose Florida State over Virginia Tech, South Carolina, and Clemson. Timothy Lenord Jernigan Jr. (born September 24, 1992) is a former American football defensive end. He was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft. He played college football at Florida State. High school career A native of Lake City, Florida, Jernigan attended Columbia High School, where he was an All-American defensive lineman and teammates with All-American offensive lineman Laremy Tunsil for his junior and senior year. Yatil Devon Green (born November 25, 1973) is a former professional American football player. A 6'2", 205 lbs. wide receiver from the University of Miami, he was selected by the Miami Dolphins in the 1st round (15th overall pick) of the 1997 NFL Draft, as Miami saw him as a much-needed speed receiver to add to a solid but unspectacular group of possession wideouts. Genus was signed after going undrafted at the 2011 NFL Draft despite being one of the highest rated prospects at center. James Hines (born October 4, 1960) is a retired American professional wrestler, better known by his ring name Bobby Fulton. He was one half of the tag team The Fantastics with Tommy Rogers.
