Colorado State Highway 135
State Highway 135 (SH 135) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Colorado. SH 135's southern terminus is at U.S. Route 50 (US 50) in Gunnison, and the northern terminus is at 6th Street in Crested Butte. It is the primary connection between Crested Butte and the outside world and is the only paved road leading to Crested Butte. Route description It begins at the intersection of U.S. Highway 50 and Main Street in Gunnison and follows Main Street North out of town. Between miles 10 and 11, it passes through the community of Almont. It terminates at the intersection of Elk Avenue and 6th Street (the Four Way Stop) in Crested Butte. History The route was established in the 1920s, when it began at SH 92 in Hotchkiss and ended at Gunnison. Gunnison is a home rule municipality that is the county seat and the most populous municipality of Gunnison County, Colorado. The city population was 6,560 at the 2020 United States Census. Gunnison was named in honor of John W. Gunnison, a United States Army officer who surveyed for a transcontinental railroad in 1853. He was searching for a route for the transcontinental railroad in 1853 and only stayed for three days before traveling west to Utah. History The town of Almont was platted in 1881 on the Fisher Ranch. Samual Fisher allegedly named the town for Almont of Kentucky, the horse that sired his favorite stallion. Paonia is a statutory town in Delta County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,451 at the 2010 census. History The area was first explored in 1853 by Captain John W. Gunnison of the United States Army. Gunnison was on an expedition for the Corps of Topographical Engineers to locate a suitable pass through the Rocky Mountains. The North Fork Valley was inhabited by the Ute people until 1880, when the Ute Indian Reservation was closed by the federal government following the infamous Meeker Massacre. Following the closure of the reservation, the site was settled in 1880 by Samuel Wade and William Clark, who had accompanied Enos Hotchkiss to the area. The town was officially incorporated in 1902 and had its first election in July of that year. The peony roots that Samuel Wade brought with him to Colorado in 1881 inspired him to submit the Latin name for peony, ''Paeonia'', as a town name.
