Colorado's At-large Congressional District
The State of Colorado was represented in the United States House of Representatives by one member of the House, elected at-large from 1876 until 1893 and from 1903 until 1913, and by two members at-large from 1913 until 1915. Colorado (, other variants) is a state in the Mountain West subregion of the Western United States. Hosea Townsend (June 16, 1840 – March 4, 1909) was an attorney and a U.S. Representative from Colorado. Appointed by Presidents McKinley and Roosevelt, he was a United States judge for the southern district of the Indian Territory from 1897 to 1907. Early life and education Born on a farm in Greenwich, Ohio, his parents were Hiram and Eliza Townsend. His father came to New London, Ohio from Massachusetts in 1816. Townsend attended the common schools and Western Reserve College, Cleveland, Ohio, in 1860. Civil War He was a student at the Western Reserve College at the outbreak of the American Civil War. He enlisted in the Second Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Cavalry, in 1861. He was promoted to lieutenant. He was stationed at Fort Gibson in Indian Territory during part of the war. Edward Thomas Taylor (June 19, 1858 – September 3, 1941) was an American lawyer and educator who served as a U.S. Representative from Colorado. A member of the Democratic Party, he served 17 terms in the U.S. House, from 1909 to 1941. Early life and career Taylor was born on a farm near Metamora, Illinois. He attended the common schools of Illinois and Kansas, and graduated from the high school at Leavenworth, Kansas, in 1881. Taylor moved to Leadville, Colorado and was principal of Leadville High School from 1881 to 1882. He graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in 1884. admitted to the bar the same year, he returned to Leadville and commenced the practice of law. The 1906 United States House of Representatives elections were held in the middle of President Theodore Roosevelt's second term. As in many midterm elections, the President's Republican Party lost seats to the opposition Democratic Party, but retained a large overall majority. Dissatisfaction with working conditions and resentment toward union busting among industrial laborers in the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest caused these groups to turn out to the polls in large numbers in support of the Democratic Party. However, gains in these regions were not enough to remove the Republican majority or the firm support that the party held among the middle class. Franklin Eli Brooks (November 19, 1860 – February 7, 1916) was a U.S. Representative from Colorado. Biography Born in Sturbridge, Massachusetts, Brooks attended the public schools. He was graduated from Southbridge High School in 1879 and from Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, in 1883. He taught school for several years. He attended the law school of Boston University in 1887 and 1888. He was admitted to the bar in 1888 and commenced practice in Boston, Massachusetts. The 1912 United States House of Representatives elections were held, coinciding with the election of President Woodrow Wilson. Wilson's victory was partly due to the division of the opposition Republican Party into conservative and progressive factions. While many progressives stayed within the party framework, they maintained lukewarm relationships with Republican leadership. Others formed a third party known as the Progressives and several switched allegiance to the Democrats.
