Colonial Square Ladies Classic
The Colonial Square Ladies Classic is an annual women's curling tournament held at the Nutana Curling Club in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The tournament has run since 1983 and is part of the Women's World Curling Tour. From 2012 to 2014, the Colonial Square Classic was a Grand Slam event on the women's World Curling Tour. The event began in February 1983 as the "Mid-Winter Classic", and was billed as the "richest women's bonspiel in the world". However, it failed to attract the top names in women's curling due to competition with the Tournament of Hearts and mixed playdowns, so the event was moved to November in 1984. Sandra Schmirler
Sandra Marie Schmirler, (June 11, 1963 – March 2, 2000) was a Canadian curler who captured three Canadian Curling Championships (Scott Tournament of Hearts) and three World Curling Championships. Schmirler also skipped (captained) her Canadian team to a gold medal at the 1998 Winter Olympics, the first year women's curling was a medal sport. At tournaments where she was not competing, Schmirler sometimes worked as a commentator for CBC Sports, which popularized her nickname "Schmirler the Curler" and claimed she was the only person who had a name that rhymed with the sport she played. She died in 2000 at 36 of cancer, leaving a legacy that extended outside of curling. Schmirler was honoured posthumously with an induction into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame and was awarded the World Curling Freytag Award, which later led to her induction into the World Curling Federation Hall of Fame. Janet Arnott
Janet Elizabeth Arnott (née Laliberte; April 17, 1956 – June 24, 2019) was a Canadian world champion curler and Olympic champion coach. Curling career Arnott was the longtime lead for her sister, Connie Laliberte winning the Scott Tournament of Hearts in 1984, 1992 and 1995 and the World Curling Championships in 1984. With Laliberte, Arnott had played in eight national championships (1984, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1999, and 2000). After Laliberte retired from curling in 2000, the team's then third, Cathy Overton-Clapham took over as skip. Laliberte returned to competitive curling in 2001, with Overton-Clapham forming her own team. Arnott joined her sister as her second for the next few seasons.
