College basketball in the Philippines is fragmented; as of today there is no single governing body, with several leagues in Metro Manila and in the provinces. The University Athletic Association of the Philippines and National Collegiate Athletic Association (Philippines) champions are considered to be the major champions, although several other leagues, claim their champions in equal standing with those of the UAAP and the NCAA. Furthermore, the NCAA and the UAAP were not members of the embattled Basketball Association of the Philippines, the then FIBA-recognized national basketball federation, although other leagues are members. Only in 2007 were the leagues included in the new national federation, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas. UAAP Basketball Championship
The UAAP Basketball Championship holds its basketball tournaments from September to December. Basketball is a mandatory sport in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP). All eight universities participate in the Men's, Women's, and Juniors (Boys') tournaments. The tournament is divided into two divisions, the Seniors' division, which is further subdivided into the Men's tournament, for male collegiate players, and the Women's tournament for female collegiate players. The other division is the Juniors' which is also subdivided into two tournaments for the male and female high school athletes. The UAAP basketball sport has a rich history of schools establishing dynasties. The Universities and Colleges Basketball League (UCBL) is a collegiate basketball tournament based in the Philippines, which was established in 2016. The inaugural season of the UCBL officially opened on October 8, 2016 with seven competing schools from Metro Manila and nearby provinces competing in the tournament. Organized by the Universities and Colleges Athletic League, Inc. (UCAL), headed by the league's president Franklin Evidente, UCBL's mission is to give better opportunities for aspiring players as well as showcase their talents in the hard court. The National Collegiate Athletic Association basketball tournament is held every first semester of the academic year (from July up to November). Each year, ten schools vie to win the two championships: the Juniors and Seniors. If a school wins both championships in one season, it said that they have won the "double championship." The tournament commences with a double-round robin of eliminations, where the four teams with the best records advance to the semifinals, with the two top seeds clinching the twice-to-beat advantage.
