Colin Smith (minister)
Colin Smith (1802–1867) was a minister of the Church of Scotland and amateur botanist, who served as Moderator of the General Assembly in 1861. He was involved in translating the Bible into Gaelic. Life He was born at Glenorchy in the Scottish Highlands in1802 the son of Patrick Smith a merchant and studied at Glasgow University.''Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae''; by Hew Scott His first role in the clergy was as assistant to Paul Fraser at Inverary Parish Church and then assisting Angus McLain at the same church. In April 1828 he was ordained as minister of the parish under the patronage of George William, Duke of Argyll in place of NcLain who translated to another parish. In August 1831 he translated to the neighbouring parish of Glenaray his place at Inverary being filled by Duncan Campbell. Smith remained minister of Glenaray for the rest of his life. The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland is the ministers and elders of the Church of Scotland, minister or elder chosen to moderate (chair) the annual General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, which is held for a week in Edinburgh every year. After chairing the Assembly, the Moderator then spends the following year representing the Church of Scotland at civic events, and visiting congregations and projects in Scotland and beyond. Blantyre () is Malawi's centre of finance and commerce, and its second largest city, with an enumerated 800,264 inhabitants . It is sometimes referred to as the commercial and industrial capital of Malawi as opposed to the political capital, Lilongwe. James Bisset (moderator)
James Bisset (1795–1872) was a minister of the Church of Scotland and Latinist, who served as Moderator of the General Assembly in 1862, the highest position in the Scottish church. Life He was born in April 1795 the second son of George Bisset, schoolmaster of Udny Academy north of Aberdeen. James took over the running of the Academy in 1812 at age 17. He attended Marischal College in Aberdeen sporadically (1808/9, 1817/8, 1818/9) and also attended Edinburgh University for some sessions. He became private tutor to the family of Fraser of Strichen (later known as Lord Lovat. James Maitland (minister)
James Maitland (1797–1872) was a minister of the Church of Scotland, who served as Moderator of the General Assembly in 1860. Life He was born in the manse at Minnigaff on 18 October 1797 the son of John Garlies Maitland of Fairgirth, minister of the parish. He studied at Edinburgh University and was licensed to preach by the Presbytery of Wigtown in January 1822. From 1822 to 1825 he assisted Andrew Brown at the Old Kirk of St Giles in Edinburgh. In November 1825 he was presented by the crown to the congregation of Kells in Dumfriesshire and was formally ordained there in September 1826. In March 1852 Glasgow University awarded him an honorary Doctor of Divinity. In 1860 he succeeded John Cook as Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland the highest position in the Scottish Church. He was succeeded in turn by Colin Smith. The moderator of the General Assembly is the chairperson of a General Assembly, the highest court of a Presbyterian or Reformed church. Kirk sessions and presbyteries may also style the chairperson as moderator. The Oxford Dictionary states that a Moderator may be a "Presbyterian minister presiding over an ecclesiastical body". Presbyterian churches are ordered by a presbyterian polity, including a hierarchy of councils or courts of elders, from the local church (kirk) Session through presbyteries (and perhaps synods) to a General Assembly.
