Gilbert Colgate
Gilbert Bayard Colgate Jr. (December 21, 1899 – October 9, 1965) was an American businessman and bobsledder who competed in the 1930s. He won the bronze medal in the two-man event at the 1936 Winter Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, with teammate Richard Lawrence. He was born and died in New York City. Colgate, a 1922 Yale University graduate, and brother of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity (Phi chapter); was also one of five children of Gilbert Colgate Sr., who was the great-grandson of William Colgate, who founded what is now the Colgate-Palmolive Company. He served as a director of the Colgate company and was chairman of the Colgate-Larsen Aircraft Company. Pat Colgate is the artistic director of the Placer Theatre Ballet dance company, which she founded. She designs all costumes and directs choreography for each original ballet staged there. Stirling Colgate
Stirling Auchincloss Colgate (; November 14, 1925 – December 1, 2013) was an American physicist at Los Alamos National Laboratory and a professor emeritus of physics, past president at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (New Mexico Tech) from 1965 to 1974, and a scion of the Colgate toothpaste family. He was America's premier diagnostician of thermonuclear weapons during the early years at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California. While much of his involvement with physics is still highly classified, he made many contributions in the open literature including physics education and astrophysics. Colgate is an American brand principally used for oral hygiene products such as toothpastes, toothbrushes, mouthwashes and dental floss. Manufactured by Colgate-Palmolive, Colgate's oral hygiene products were first sold by the company in 1873, sixteen years after the death of the founder, William Colgate. The company originally sold soap. Colgate toothpaste was sold in glass jars since 1873. Tubes, as pioneered by Kalodont, Johnson & Johnson (Zonweiss) and Sheffield, were introduced in 1896. James Boorman Colgate (March 4, 1818 – February 7, 1904), son of William Colgate and Mary Gilbert, was an American financier. Biography He was born in New York City and received his first training in the house of Boorman, Johnston, and Company. In 1852, he formed a partnership with John Bond Trevor and opened the banking house of Trevor and Colgate; this company dealt in stocks, securities and precious metals and regulated a large portion of the gold and paper exchange during the Civil War. Samuel Colgate (March 22, 1822 – April 23, 1897), son of William Colgate, was an American manufacturer and philanthropist, born in New York City. When William Colgate died in 1857, Samuel took over the business (he did not want to continue the business but thought it would be the right thing to do), reorganizing it as Colgate & Company. In 1872, Samuel introduced Cashmere Bouquet, the world’s first milled perfumed toilet soap. Then in 1873, Colgate introduced its first Colgate Toothpaste, an aromatic toothpaste sold in jars. Colgate Hoyt (March 2, 1849 – January 30, 1922) was an American businessman active in the late nineteenth century. Early life Hoyt was born on March 2, 1849, in Cleveland, Ohio. He was one of six children born to Mary Ella ( née Beebe) Hoyt (1814–1890) and Dr. James Madison Hoyt (1815–1895), a Baptist minister, lawyer, businessman and author. Among his siblings was Wayland Hoyt, who was also a Baptist minister and author. He was a descendant of Simon Hoyt, who landed in Massachusetts in 1628 and settled in Windsor, Connecticut, and Walker Hoyt, who was one of the first settlers of Norwalk. Hoyt attended public schools in Cleveland before attending the Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts.
