Archibald Cochrane (rear Admiral)
Rear-Admiral Archibald Cochrane, (20 June 1874 – 15 July 1952) was a British Royal Navy officer. Biography Cochrane was born on 20 June 1874 and was the eldest son of Vice Admiral Basil E. Cochrane. His family had a tradition of naval service and among them was the similarly named Archibald Cochrane (1783–1829). Educated at Woodcote House in Windlesham, Surrey and then at Eastman's Royal Naval Academy, Stubbington House School and HMS ''Britannia'', Cochrane joined the Royal Navy in 1888 and went to sea in 1890. He was promoted to Sub-Lieutenant in 1894 and to Lieutenant in 1896. While holding that rank and stationed on HMS ''Anson'' in 1897, he was given charge of an operation involving a landing on Crete. In February 1900, he was posted to the pre-dreadnought battleship HMS ''Ocean'', which was stationed at the Mediterranean Fleet for its first commission. Archibald Cochrane, 9th Earl Of Dundonald
Archibald Cochrane, 9th Earl of Dundonald FRSE (1 January 1748 – 1 July 1831) was a Scottish nobleman and inventor. Life The son of Thomas Cochrane, 8th Earl of Dundonald, he joined the British Army as a youth and also served time in the Royal Navy before returning to Culross in 1778 after inheriting the Earldom of Dundonald from his father. He inherited a title and family lands but little money. Left with no other means of support, Archibald turned to invention. Cochrane's most noted invention was a method for making coal tar (patented in 1781) on an industrial scale. The British Tar Company invested in a works; it was managed by John Loudon McAdam. The coke byproduct was used, in part, by an ironworks at Muirkirk, and the flammability of the coal gas byproduct was recognised but not capitalized on. Alexander Baillie-Cochrane
Alexander Dundas Ross Cochrane-Wishart-Baillie, 1st Baron Lamington (24 November 1816 – 15 February 1890), better known as Alexander Baillie-Cochrane, was a British Conservative politician perhaps best known for his association with Young England in the early 1840s. The son of Admiral of the Fleet Sir Thomas John Cochrane, he succeeded to the Baillie estate at Lamington in 1833. He attended Cambridge University before entering parliament as a member for Bridport in 1841. He later sat for Lanarkshire, Honiton, and finally the Isle of Wight until 1880 when he was made a peer and went to the House of Lords as Baron Lamington, of Lamington in the County of Lanark. Admiral of the Blue Sir Alexander Inglis Cochrane (born Alexander Forrester Cochrane; 23 April 1758 – 26 January 1832) was a senior Royal Navy commander during the Napoleonic Wars and achieved the rank of admiral. He had previously captained HMS ''Ajax'' in Alexandria, Egypt during the Egyptian operation of 1801. Cochrane was knighted into the Order of the Bath for his services in 1806. Old Bushmills Distillery
The Old Bushmills Distillery is an alcohol (primarily Irish whiskey) distillery in Bushmills, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, owned by Casa Cuervo. Bushmills Distillery uses water drawn from Saint Columb's Rill, which is a tributary of the River Bush. The distillery is a popular tourist attraction, with around 120,000 visitors per year. The company that originally built the distillery was formed in 1784, although the date 1608 is printed on the label of the brand – referring to an earlier date when a royal licence was granted to a local landowner to distil whiskey in the area.
