Cochran, Virginia
Cochran is an unincorporated community located in Brunswick County, in the U.S. state of Virginia. The settlement is located along a former railroad. The Richmond, Petersburg and Carolina Railroad, passing through Cochran from Petersburg, Virginia to Ridgeway Junction (today Norlina, North Carolina), was completed in 1900, at which point it was merged into the Seaboard Air Line (SAL). By 1914, the population of Cochran was estimate by the railroad to be somewhere around 200. The Seaboard line (dubbed the "S-line" after later mergers) continued to operate until the 1980s, and today Cochran is along the abandoned portion of the CSX Norlina Subdivision The Norlina Subdivision is a railroad line owned by CSX Transportation in the U.S. State of North Carolina. Brunswick County is a United States county located on the southern border of the Commonwealth of Virginia. This rural county is known as one of the claimants to be the namesake of Brunswick stew. Brunswick County was created in 1720 from parts of Prince George, Surry and Isle of Wight counties. Richmond, Petersburg And Carolina Railroad
The Richmond, Petersburg and Carolina Railroad was a railroad built in the early 1900s. As its name suggests, it ran from Richmond, Virginia south through Petersburg into northern North Carolina. It was a key part of the network of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad. History The Richmond, Petersburg and Carolina Railroad was chartered in 1882 by the Virginia General Assembly and was initially known as the Virginia and Carolina Railroad. After it was chartered, the railroad did not have the financial resources to begin construction. In 1897, the charter was sold to the city of Petersburg who renamed it the Richmond, Petersburg and Carolina Railroad and construction started. Petersburg is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia in the United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 33,458. The Bureau of Economic Analysis combines Petersburg (along with the city of Colonial Heights) with Dinwiddie County for statistical purposes. Seaboard Air Line
The Seaboard Air Line Railroad , which styled itself "The Route of Courteous Service," was an American railroad which existed from April 14, 1900, until July 1, 1967, when it merged with the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, its longtime rival, to form the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad. Predecessor railroads dated from the 1830s and reorganized extensively to rebuild after the American Civil War. The company was headquartered in Norfolk, Virginia, until 1958, when its main offices were relocated to Richmond, Virginia. The Seaboard Air Line Railway Building in Norfolk's historic Freemason District still stands and has been converted into apartments. Norlina Subdivision
The Norlina Subdivision is a railroad line owned by CSX Transportation in the U.S. State of North Carolina. The line currently runs from Norlina, North Carolina to Raleigh, North Carolina for a total of 51.2 miles. At its north end the line comes to an end and at its south end the line continues north from the Aberdeen Subdivision. While the current line dates back to 1840, it has been known as the Norlina Subdivision since the 1970s. Under CSX's predecessor, the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad, the Norlina Subdivision continued north to Collier Yard near Petersburg, Virginia.
