Cobitidae
Cobitidae, also known as the True loaches, is a family of Old World freshwater fish. They occur throughout Eurasia and in Morocco, and inhabit riverine ecosystems. Today, most "loaches" are placed in other families (see below). The family includes about 260 described species. Loach (fish)
Loaches are fish of the superfamily Cobitoidea. They are freshwater, benthic (bottom-dwelling) fish found in rivers and creeks throughout Eurasia and northern Africa. Loaches are among the most diverse groups of fish; the 1249 known species of Cobitoidea comprise about 107 genera divided among 9 families. Etymology The name Cobitoidea comes from the type genus, ''Cobitis'', described by Carl Linnaeus in his landmark 1758 10th edition of ''Systema Naturae''. However, its origin predates modern zoological nomenclature and derives from a term used by Aristotle to refer to "small fishes that bury... like the gudgeon." Description Loaches display a wide variety of morphologies, making the group difficult to characterize as a whole using external traits. Paramisgurnus
The large-scale loach (''Paramisgurnus dabryanus'') is a species of true loach that is native to Mainland China, Hainan, Taiwan, Korea, and the Russian Far East. It can be found in water bodies such as the Yangtze Basin, Pearl River, Amur River, and various other drainages. There are several known invasive populations in places such as Barcelona, the San Joaquin River in California, and the majority of Japan. The large-scale loach is typically brown, grey, or golden in color with mottled or speckled black dots, which leads to it sometimes called a "peppered loach" when sold at pet stores (though it is more often misidentified as the pond loach instead). It is a small loach, growing between 7.3 to 15.4 cm (2.9 to 6.1 in) TL. The diet and behaviors of the large-scaled loach are just about the same as other true loaches. Pangio
''Pangio'' is a genus of small Asian freshwater fish in the true loach family Cobitidae. In earlier taxonomic schemes it was known as ''Acanthophthalmus''. The "kuhli loach" is well-known in the aquarium trade and commonly identified as ''P. kuhlii'', but most individuals actually appear to be ''P. semicincta''. The type species is ''Cobitis cinnamomea'' McClelland 1839, now known as ''Pangio pangia''. These fish are best represented in Southeast Asia where all but five of the species live, including the Greater Sunda Islands with sixteen species. The five species found outside Southeast Asia are from India and Myanmar. They inhabit a wide range of mostly calm waters such as streams, swamps (often peat swamps) and backwaters, but there are also species in fast-flowing waters, and one, ''P. bhujia'', lives underground. Misgurnus
Misgurnus is a genus of true loaches found in Europe and Asia. The origin of the name ''Misgurnus'' comes from the Greek word (to hate) and the Turkish (loud), a name given to them due to their habit of becoming very active during barometric pressure changes that occur during thunderstorms. The common names, weather loach or weatherfish, also derive from this behavior. Some species of misgurnus are eaten, mostly in Asia, and are also sold as pets in the aquarium trade. ''Lepidocephalus'' is a genus of loaches native to rivers in the Southeast Asian countries of Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand and Manipur, north east India. Members of this genus are known as "spirit loaches".Deein, G., Tangjitjaroen, W. & Page, L.M. (2014)A revision of the spirit loaches, genus ''Lepidocephalus'' (Cypriniformes, Cobitidae).
