Coalseam Conservation Park
Coalseam Conservation Park is a conservation park in the Shire of Mingenew, in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, approximately inland from Geraldton. The park is an important refuge for the threatened fauna and flora of the Wheatbelt region. It is renowned for its spectacular spring wildflowers. The park is also the site of the discovery of Western Australia's first coal deposits in 1846 and a rare example of coal being visible on the surface. Geology Coalseam Conservation Park is one of the few places on Earth where coal can be seen on the surface. The Irwin River, which flows through the park, exposes a cross section of the local rock, with the Holmwood Shale at the bottom (280 million years old), the High Cliff sandstone (269 million years old) above, the Irwin River Coal Measures (265 million years old) next and the Victoria Plateau Sandstone (50 million years old) and the Laterite (40 million years old) on top. Irwin River
The Irwin River is a river in the Mid West region of Western Australia. It was named on 9 April 1839 by the explorer George Grey, while on his second disastrous exploration expedition along the Western Australian coast, after his friend Major Frederick Irwin, the Commandant of the Swan River settlement, and later acting Governor of Western Australia from 1847 to 1848. The headwaters of the Irwin are located below Canna near Pindar. The river flows west until discharging into Arurine Bay near Dongara. The river passes through the Coalseam Conservation Park to the north of Mingenew which has a mixed geology of siltstones, claystones and sandstones that form stripes in the cliff faces formed by the river. The river has four tributaries: Lockier River, Sand Plain Creek, Nangetty Creek and Mullewa Creek. The river occasionally floods as it did in 1945 following a severe storm that swept over the area. The Shire of Mingenew is a Local government areas of Western Australia, local government area in the Mid West (Western Australia), Mid West region of Western Australia, about southeast of the city of Geraldton and about north of the state capital, Perth. The Shire covers an area of , and its seat of government is the town of Mingenew, Western Australia, Mingenew. History The Shire of Mingenew was initially constituted as the Upper Irwin Road District on 25 October 1901, over a much larger area. On 12 December 1919, it was renamed the Mingenew Road District. Between 1923 and 1928, it lost 80% of its land area to the neighboring Shire of Perenjori, Perenjori-Morawa Road District and the new districts of Shire of Carnamah, Carnamah and Shire of Three Springs, Three Springs. The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) is the Government of Western Australia, Western Australian government department responsible for managing lands and waters described in the ''Conservation and Land Management Act 1984'', the ''Rottnest Island Authority Act 1987'', the ''Swan and Canning Rivers Management Act 2006'', the ''Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority Act 1998'', and the ''Zoological Parks Authority Act 2001'', and implementing the state's conservation and environment legislation and regulations.
