Co-Rux-Te-Chod-Ish
Co-Rux-Te-Chod-Ish (English: Mad or Angry Bear) was a Pawnee Scout and a recipient of the United States military's highest decoration—the Medal of Honor—for his actions in the Indian Wars of the western United States. He was the first Native American to receive the Medal of Honor. Biography Co-Rux-Te-Chod-Ish (Mad or Angry Bear) was born circa 1847 in Nebraska, growing up as a Pawnee tribesman. He entered the U.S. Army at Columbus, Nebraska as an Indian Scout. On 8 July 1869, while chasing after a Cheyenne Dog Soldier near the Republican River in Kansas, he was thrown from his horse and was badly injured when another member of his unit shot him by mistake. United States Army Indian Scouts
Native Americans have made up an integral part of U.S. military conflicts since America's beginning. Colonists recruited Indian allies during such instances as the Pequot War from 1634–1638, the Revolutionary War, as well as in War of 1812. Native Americans also fought on both sides during the American Civil War, as well as military missions abroad including the most notable, the Codetalkers who served in World War II. The Scouts were active in the American West in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Including those who accompanied General John J. Pershing in 1916 on his expedition to Mexico in pursuit of Pancho Villa. Indian Scouts were officially deactivated in 1947 when their last member retired from the Army at Fort Huachuca, Arizona. This is a list of Native Americans awarded the nation's highest military decoration — the Medal of Honor. The Medal of Honor is bestowed "for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life, above and beyond the call of duty, in actual combat against an armed enemy force." The medal is awarded by the President of the United States on behalf of the Congress. Of the 3,469 Medals of Honor awarded as of 2010, 29 have been awarded to Native Americans. The Medal of Honor was created during the American Civil War and is the highest military decoration presented by the United States government to a member of its armed forces. Indian Wars is the name generally used in the United States to describe a series of conflicts between the colonial or federal government and the Native people of North America. Pawnee Language
The Pawnee language is a Caddoan language traditionally spoken by Pawnee Native Americans, currently inhabiting in north-central Oklahoma. Historically, the Pawnee lived along the Platte River in what is now Nebraska. Dialects Two important dialect divisions are evident in Pawnee: South Band and ''Skiri''. The distinction between the two dialects rests on differences in their respective phonetic inventory and lexicon. Status Prior to colonization and US expansion, Pawnee was spoken by all members of the Nation. Today Pawnee is only spoken fluently by a shrinking number of elderly speakers.
