Co-Optimist Rugby Club
The Co-Optimist Rugby Club is an invitational rugby union club founded in 1924 by Jock Wemyss, the former Scottish test player, together with George St Claire Murray, a rugby enthusiast from the Watsonians club. The Co-Optimists have played against national fifteen-a-side teams including , and in the 1980s. The club also has a proud record at the Hong Kong Sevens tournament, finishing as runner-up to Fiji in 1980, as a semi-finalist against Australia in 1981, and a quarter-finalist in 1986. Club colours and emblem The club colours are a navy blue jersey with white shorts and navy and white hooped socks. The Co-Optimist badge is a lion ''couchant'' in blue on a white background. Jock Wemyss
Andrew "Jock" Wemyss (pronounced "Weemz") (22 May 1893, Galashiels – 21 January 1974, Edinburgh) was a Scottish rugby union player, who played at prop. Wemyss lost one of his eyes in World War I, but continued to play after the war (games were suspended during the conflict). Rugby Union career Amateur career Wemyss played for Brunstane in Edinburgh. From the Musselburgh News of 5 March 1920: Mr Andrew Wemyss, who resides in Joppa, and is a former member of the Brunstane Rugby Football Club, has been selected by the Scottish Rugby Football Union to take part in the international match against England. Rob Wainwright (rugby Union)
Robert Iain Wainwright (born 22 March 1965) is a former rugby union footballer who was capped 37 times for Scotland (Captain 16 times) and once for the British and Irish Lions. He played flanker. Early life Wainwright was born in Perth, Scotland, the only son of five children. He was educated at Glenalmond College, where his father Jim was a long-serving geography teacher and former Warden (Headmaster), and read medicine at Magdalene College, Cambridge on an Army bursary. While at Cambridge he earned full blues in rugby and boxing. Melrose Sevens
Melrose Sevens is an annual rugby sevens event held by Melrose Rugby Club, at The Greenyards in Melrose, Scotland. It is the oldest rugby sevens competition in the world, dating back to 1883 when the tournament was suggested by former Melrose player Ned Haig. English side London Scottish are the current champions after beating Edinburgh Accies 29–12 in the 2019 final to win the event for the first time since 1965. History Held every April, the tournament is part of the Kings of the Sevens competition, and has attracted teams from as far afield as Japan, Hong Kong, Uruguay and South Africa. From 2018 the playing time in the final was cut from twenty minutes to fourteen minutes which is in line with the standard match time. Barbarian Rugby Club
The Barbarian Rugby Club, more commonly known as the French Barbarians, is a rugby union team formed in 1979 and based in France. It was founded as an amateur invitational team modeled on the Barbarian F.C. From the start of the 2017–18 season, the French Barbarians became the official second national team of the French Rugby Federation, which had previously designated either the France U20 side or France A as that team. The French Barbarians play in sky, navy and royal blue hooped jerseys. As with the original Barbarians, players retain the socks from their "home" club strip. Papua New Guinea National Rugby Sevens Team
The Papua New Guinea national rugby sevens team competes in the Pacific Games, Commonwealth Games, Challenger Series and the Oceania Sevens. They finished third in 2009 and fourth in 2010, 2015 and 2016 in the Oceania Sevens. The team has also entered selected World Rugby Sevens Series tournaments as an invited team. The team has been invited to the New Zealand Sevens in 2000, 2001, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2015, 2017 and 2018, and to the Australian Sevens in 2000, 2009/10, 2010/11, 2011/12, 2017 and 2018. The New Zealand national rugby sevens team competes in the World Rugby Sevens Series, Rugby World Cup Sevens, Summer Olympic Games and the Commonwealth Games. They have won a record twelve World Rugby Sevens Series titles. The team has been officially known as the All Blacks Sevens since 1 June 2012. Meggetland Sports Complex, owned by Edinburgh Leisure, is a Sports Pavilion used for a number of International fixtures across the five outdoor facilities they hold; 3G Pitch, Astroturf, Football Pitches, Rugby Pitches and Cricket Pitches. The USSR national rugby union team was a sporting side that represented the Soviet Union in rugby union until the early 1990s. History Although tournaments such as the Soviet Cup and the Soviet Championship existed, rugby never became a major sport in the USSR. Rugby union was the more popular of the two rugby codes, however, as rugby league only began being played following the collapse of the Soviet Union.
