Clomanto GAA
Clomanto GAA was a Gaelic Athletic Association club located near Urlingford, County Kilkenny, Ireland. The club was primarily concerned with the game of hurling. History Located in the Clomanto area, on the Kilkenny-Tipperary border, Clomanto operated at junior level for much of its existence. The club hosted a game against Freshford during the GAA's Gaelic Sunday series of events on 4 August 1918. Clomanto won the Northern Kilkenny JHC title in 1922, in what was their only victory in an adult final in any grade in the club's history. The club lost the subsequent Kilkenny JHC final to Clonmore. After a period of decline the club amalgamated with Urlingford under the new name of Emeralds in 1972. The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA; ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael ; CLG) is an Irish international amateur sporting and cultural organisation, focused primarily on promoting indigenous Gaelic games and pastimes, which include the traditional Irish sports of hurling, camogie, Gaelic football, Gaelic handball and rounders. Urlingford
Urlingford () is a town, as well as a civil parish within the barony of Galmoy. It is located in the north west of County Kilkenny, along the boundary with County Tipperary, in Leinster, Ireland. Access The town lies on the R639. The M8 motorway runs just west of the town, from which both Urlingford and nearby Johnstown are accessed via junction four. Urlingford is a bus hub, with major operator JJ Kavanagh and Sons based there. Hurling
Hurling ( ga, iománaíocht, ') is an outdoor team game of ancient Gaelic Irish origin, played by men. One of Ireland's native Gaelic games, it shares a number of features with Gaelic football, such as the field and goals, the number of players and much terminology. The same game played by women is called camogie ('), which shares a common Gaelic root. The objective of the game is for players to use an ash wood stick called a hurley (in Irish a ', pronounced or ) to hit a small ball called a ' between the opponent's goalposts either over the crossbar for one point or under the crossbar into a net guarded by a goalkeeper for three points. Kilkenny Premier Junior Hurling Championship
The J. J. Kavanagh & Sons Premier Junior Hurling Championship is an annual hurling competition organised by the Kilkenny County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association since 1905 for the third-tier hurling teams in the county of Kilkenny in Ireland. The series of games are played during the summer and autumn months with the county final currently being played at Nowlan Park in October. The prize for the winning team is the Bob Aylward Cup. The championship has always been played on a straight knockout basis whereby once a team loses they are eliminated from the series. The Kilkenny County Championship is an integral part of the wider Leinster GAA Junior Club Hurling Championship. Emeralds GAA
Emeralds GAA is a junior Gaelic Athletic Association club located in Urlingford, County Kilkenny, Ireland. The club was founded in 1972 and almost exclusively fields teams in hurling. They spent 14 seasons in intermediate grade in Kilkenny before being relegated in 2015 back to the junior grade. History In the early years of the 20th, century hurling was very strong in the parish of Urlingford with three teams competing. – Graine, Urlingford and Clomanta. Despite large competition, it was clear that a unified parish hurling team would provide a stronger and more capable force to compete against the larger parishes of the county. 1922 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship
The 1922 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was the 36th staging of the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, the Gaelic Athletic Association's premier inter-county hurling tournament. The championship began in May 1922 and ended on 9 September 1923. The championship was won by Kilkenny who secured the title following a 4-2 to 2-6 defeat of Tipperary in the All-Ireland final. This was their 8th All-Ireland title, their first in nine championship seasons. Pat Glendon
Patrick Glendon (10 March 1895 – 22 June 1967) was an Irish hurler. Usually lining out as at corner-back, he was a member of the Kilkenny team that won the 1922 All-Ireland Championship. Glendon had a lengthy career with Clomanto, however, he had little in terms of club success. After being selected for the Kilkenny senior team in 1922, he was a regular member of the team at various times over the following five championship seasons. He won his first Leinster medal in his debut season in 1922 before later winning his sole All-Ireland medal after Kilkenny's defeat of Tipperary in the final. Glendon won a second Leinster medal in 1926. Glendon was married to Johanna (née Moriarty). Prior to his hurling career he was an active member of the Old IRA during the War of Independence.
