Clifton Unified School District
The Clifton Unified School District was the school district in Clifton, Arizona. It contained two schools, Laugharn Elementary School and Clifton High School until the closing of the district in 2010. Clifton High School Up until September 2010, it also operated Clifton High School (colors maroon and gold, mascot the Trojans). The state of Arizona hinted it would petition for its closure in late spring, because it was labeled as a "failing school" and not meeting progress benchmarks in federal law and on the Arizona's Instrument to Measure Standards statewide exam; it followed through at a meeting in late August 2010. Clifton is a town in and is the county seat of Greenlee County, Arizona, United States, along the San Francisco River. Arizona's Instrument to Measure Standards (AIMS) was a standardized test administered by the state of Arizona. AIMS was a standards-based assessment aligned with the Arizona Academic Content Standards. In November 2014, the Arizona State Board of Education voted to replace AIMS with a new test called AzMERIT (Arizona's Measurement of Educational Readiness to Inform Teaching). Test contents The content of AIMS varied by grade level, but it usually featured three reading and mathematics sections, as well as a writing portion, where students were assigned to write an essay based on a prompt given to them. For some grade levels, the test included a science portion in lieu of a writing section. Morenci is a census-designated place (CDP) and company town in Greenlee County, Arizona, United States, and was founded by the Detroit Copper Mining Company of Arizona. The population was 2000 at the 2000 census and 1,489 at the 2010 census. The biggest employer in Morenci (and in nearby Clifton) and the owner of the town is Freeport-McMoRan, the owner of the Morenci Mine, the largest copper mining operation in North America, and one of the largest copper mines in the world.
