Clifford Patrick O'Sullivan
Clifford Patrick O'Sullivan (December 8, 1897 – October 7, 1975) was a United States circuit judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and previously was a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. Education and career Born in Chicago, Illinois, O'Sullivan received a Bachelor of Laws from Notre Dame Law School in 1920. He was in private practice in Port Huron, Michigan from 1920 to 1924, and then in Chicago until 1926, returning to Port Huron until 1957. Federal judicial service O'Sullivan was nominated by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on June 6, 1957, to a seat on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan vacated by Judge Arthur A. Koscinski. He was confirmed by the United States Senate on August 5, 1957, and received his commission on August 7, 1957. His service terminated on April 4, 1960, due to his elevation to the Sixth Circuit. Senior status is a form of semi-retirement for United States federal judges. To qualify, a judge in the Federal judiciary of the United States, federal court system must be at least 65 years old, and the sum of the judge's age and years of service as a federal judge must be at least 80 years. As long as senior judges carry at least a 25 percent caseload or meet other criteria for activity, they remain entitled to maintain a staffed office and chambers, including a secretary and their normal complement of law clerks, and they continue to receive annual cost-of-living increases. Senior judges vacate their seats on the bench, and the President of the United States, president may appoint new full-time judges to fill those seats. Some U.S. states have similar systems for senior judges. Port Huron is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of St. Clair County. The population was 30,184 at the 2010 census. The city is adjacent to Port Huron Township but is administered separately. Located along the St. Clair River, it is connected to Point Edward, Ontario in Canada via the Blue Water Bridge.
