Cliff Portwood
Clifford Portwood (17 October 1937 – 10 January 2012) was an English Association football, footballer and later singer and television personality. A Midfielder#Winger, winger and inside-forward, he scored 96 goals in 252 league games in a fourteen-year career in the English Football League, Football League. He spent 1955 to 1959 at Preston North End F.C., Preston North End, without making an appearance, before he was sold on to Port Vale F.C., Port Vale for £750. He was sold on to Grimsby Town F.C., Grimsby Town for £6,000 in July 1961, and helped the club to win promotion out of the Football League Third Division, Third Division in 1961–62 Football League, 1961–62. He moved on to Portsmouth F.C., Portsmouth for £4,000 in 1963, where he remained for the next six years, before he left the professional game to move to South Africa. Salford, Greater Manchester
Salford () is a city and the largest settlement in the City of Salford metropolitan borough in Greater Manchester, England. In 2011, Salford had a population of 103,886. It is also the second and only other city in the metropolitan county after neighbouring Manchester. Salford is located in a meander of the River Irwell which forms part of its boundary with Manchester. The former County Borough of Salford, which also included Broughton, Pendleton and Kersal, was granted city status in 1926. Frank Hill
Frank Robert Hill (21 May 1906 – 28 August 1993) was a Scottish football player and manager. Playing career Forfar and Aberdeen Hill was born in Forfar and started his career at Forfar Athletic, joining the club in 1924. He moved to Aberdeen in 1928 and played over 100 Scottish Division One matches. A right-half (which was more or less the equivalent of a defensive midfield position), Hill earned the nickname "Tiger" for his "tigerish" tackling. During his four years at Aberdeen, he also won three caps for Scotland (between 1930 and 1931). Hill left Aberdeen under something of a cloud, being one of five players dropped by manager Paddy Travers in November 1931. At the time, the reasons were not clear, but the club's official history claims that several players had been involved in a betting scandal. The Football Association Challenge Cup, more commonly known as the FA Cup, is an annual knockout football competition in men's domestic English football. First played during the 1871–72 season, it is the oldest national football competition in the world. It is organised by and named after The Football Association (The FA). Norman Low
Norman Harvey Low (23 March 1914 – 21 May 1994) was a Scottish football player and manager. He was the son of Scottish international footballer, Wilf Low. A central defender, he played for Newcastle United between 1931 and 1933, before a three years spell with Liverpool. From 1936 up until the end of World War II he turned out for Newport County, helping the club to the Third Division South title in 1938–39. After the war he spent 1946 to 1950 with Norwich City. In 1950 he was appointed as Norwich City's manager, and led to the club to a second-place finish in the Third Division South in 1950–51. Despite this, promotion alluded him before he departed in April 1955. He spent January 1956 to February 1957 as Workington's manager, before he was installed in the hotseat at Port Vale. The Royal Air Force (RAF) is the United Kingdom's air and space force. It was formed towards the end of the First World War on 1 April 1918, becoming the first independent air force in the world, by regrouping the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS). National service is the system of voluntary government service, usually military service. Conscription is mandatory national service. The term ''national service'' comes from the United Kingdom's National Service (Armed Forces) Act 1939. The length and nature of national service depends on the country in question. In some instances, national service is compulsory, and citizens living abroad can be called back to their country of origin to complete it. In other cases, national service is voluntary. Many young people spend one or more years in such programmes. Compulsory military service typically requires all citizens to enroll for one or two years, usually at age 18 (later for university-level students). Football League First Division
The Football League First Division was a division of the Football League in England from 1888 until 2004. It was the top division in the English football league system from the season 1888–89 until 1991–92, a century in which the First Division's winning club became English men's football champions. The First Division contained between 12 and 24 clubs, playing each other home and away in a double round robin. The competition was based on two points for a win from 1888 until the increase to three points for a win in 1981. After the creation of the Premier League, the name First Division was given to the second-tier division (from 1992). The name ceased to exist after the 2003–04 First Division season.
