Cliff Clevenger
Cliff Clevenger (August 20, 1885 – December 13, 1960) was a United States representative from Ohio. He served ten terms in Congress from 1939 to 1959. Biography Cliff Clevenger was born on a ranch near Long Pine, Brown County, Nebraska. He moved in 1895 with his parents to Lacona, Iowa, where he attended the public schools. He engaged in the mercantile business at Marengo, Iowa, 1901–1903 and at Appleton, Wisconsin, 1904-1914. He was also president of the Clevenger Stores, Bowling Green, Ohio, 1915–1926 and manager of the F. W. Uhlman Stores, Bryan, Ohio, 1927-1938. Congress Clevenger was elected as a Republican to the Seventy-sixth and to the nine succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1939 - January 3, 1959). He was not a candidate for renomination in 1958. He died at his home in Tiffin, Ohio in 1960. Clevenger voted against the Civil Rights Act of 1957. Ohio's 5th Congressional District
Ohio's 5th congressional district is in northwestern and north central Ohio and borders Michigan and Indiana. The district is currently represented by Republican Bob Latta. The district borders have changed somewhat from the previous redistrict as some of the easternmost counties were redistricted to other districts. From 2003 to 2013 all of Crawford, Defiance, Fulton,Hancock,Henry, Huron, Paulding, Putnam, Sandusky, Seneca, Van Wert, Williams, and Wood Counties were included in this district. Appleton ( mez, Ahkōnemeh) is a city in Outagamie, Calumet, and Winnebago counties in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. One of the Fox Cities, it is situated on the Fox River, southwest of Green Bay and north of Milwaukee. Appleton is the county seat of Outagamie County. As of the 2020 Census it had a population of 75,644, making it the sixth largest city in Wisconsin. Civil Rights Act Of 1957
The Civil Rights Act of 1957 was the first federal civil rights legislation passed by the United States Congress since the Civil Rights Act of 1875. The bill was passed by the 85th United States Congress and signed into law by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on September 9, 1957. The Supreme Court of the United States, Supreme Court's 1954 ruling in the case of ''Brown v. Board of Education'' brought the issue of school desegregation to the fore of public attention, as Southern Democratic leaders began a campaign of "massive resistance" against desegregation. In the midst of this campaign, President Eisenhower proposed a civil rights bill designed to provide federal protection for African Americans, African American voting rights; most African Americans in the Southern United States had been Disenfranchisement after the Reconstruction Era, disenfranchised by state and local laws. Bryan, Ohio
Bryan is a city in, and the county seat of, Williams County, Ohio, United States. It is located in the state's northwestern corner, southwest of Toledo. The population was 8,729 at the 2020 census. History Bryan was platted in 1840 by John A. Bryan, and named for him. It was incorporated as a village in 1841, and reincorporated as a city in 1941. Williams County was originally part of Defiance County, with Defiance as the county seat. The area was later split into Williams and Defiance counties. Bryan was named the seat for the new county, but not without conflict; the village of Montpelier was considered a more centralized location. The people of Montpelier petitioned the state legislature, but in the end Bryan was named county seat because of its greater industrial and commercial importance and because of its higher population. Bowling Green is a city in and the county seat of Wood County, Ohio, United States, located southwest of Toledo. The population was 30,028 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Toledo Metropolitan Area and a member of the Toledo Metropolitan Area Council of Governments. Bowling Green is the home of Bowling Green State University.
