Cliff Burge
Clifford Charles "Cliff" Burge (27 April 1892 – 14 August 1918) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Melbourne in the Victorian Football League. He was killed in action in World War I in France. Family The son of Charles Abraham Burge (1863-1939), and Emily Jane Burge, née Morris (1861-1947). He had two brothers, Trevor Robert William Burge (1895-1953), and Maxwell Lewis Burge (1899-1976), and two sisters, Emily Blanche Burge (1894-1895) and Emily May Burge (1897-1989). Education He completed his education at Melbourne High School, where he was a member of the school's First XVIII. Football He played five senior games for Melbourne in 1914. He was already in the army by the start of the 1915 season. Arthur Best
Arthur Best (18 October 1888 – 17 June 1960) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the St Kilda Football Club and Melbourne Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). His father was Sir Robert Best, a prominent politician who served in the Victorian Legislative Assembly and Parliament of Australia. In September 1914, Best enlisted in the AIF to fight in World War I. He had been working as a salesman prior to enlistment. A member of the 58th Battalion, Best worked his way up from the rank of private to captain. Frank Hurrey
Frank Steadman Hurrey (23 June 1885 – 19 August 1953) was a former Australian rules footballer who played with Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Family One of four children, and the son of Alfred Clarke Hurrey (1855-1931), and Mary Anna Frances Hurrey (1853-1936), née Newman, Frank Steadman Hurrey was born on 23 June 1885. He was engaged to a Miss Vera Agnes Patterson in 1913; however, they did not marry — Miss Patterson married a Donald William McKellar in June 1915. Hurrey remained single for the rest of his life. He died on 19 August 1953. Football Recruited by Melbourne from the Burwood Football Club, and selected at half-back flank, he was one of Melbourne's best players (in a team that only had 17 men, due to Ernest Denton's broken jaw in the first quarter) in his first senior game, the last match of the 1905 season, against Carlton on 9 September 1905. Tim Collins (footballer)
Timothy James Collins (24 December 1889 – 19 September 1971) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Football Hawthorn's captain in the MJFA before joining Melbourne, Collins never played again after seriously injuring his knee in the second quarter of the round 13, 1915 loss to Collingwood. Alexander Fraser (Australian Politician)
Alexander John Fraser (22 August 1892 – 9 July 1965) was an Australian politician. Fraser was educated at Kyneton College in Kyneton, Victoria, before becoming a company manager. He was a good enough Australian rules footballer to play ten games for Melbourne in the 1914 and 1915 Victorian Football League seasons. John Filomeno "Percy" Rodriguez (5 January 1893 – 20 March 1917) was an Australian rules footballer who played with University and Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Born in Broome, Western Australia. He was killed in action at France during the Battle of the Somme. Alf George
Alfred Thomas George (7 September 1884 – 28 April 1946) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Melbourne and Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL). George was the captain of Melbourne for the 1912 and 1913 seasons. Early life George was born in Mount Egerton on 7 September 1884. He played football for Seymour, Numurkah and, finally, Essendon Association, before being recruited to play for Essendon. Football career Essendon George was recruited at the beginning of 1906 and he made his VFL debut in round 3 of that year, going on to play 16 games in his first season. George generally played as a ruckman, but could also play in defence and was known for his marking ability. In total, he played 33 games for Essendon between 1906 and 1909, with his best season for Essendon being his first, where he played in a losing semi final. Frank Lugton
Frank Leslie Lugton (4 November 1893 – 29 July 1916) was an Australian sportsman who played first-class cricket for Victoria and Australian rules football for Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Family One of the ten children of Charles Edward Lugton (1860-1927), and Jane Ann Lugton (1861-1944), née May, Frank Leslie Lugton was born at Northcote, Victoria on 4 November 1893. His older brother, Edward Charles Lugton (1885-1939), served as a gunner in the First AIF. Another brother, John Archibald Lugton (1889-1918), also served in the First AIF, and died of wounds sustained in action in August 1918. Lugton Street, in Alphington, Victoria was named as a local tribute to the three brothers. Cricket Lugton was a right-handed batsman and a fast-medium bowler. Joe Pearce (footballer)
Arthur Mueller "Joe" Pearce (28 January 1885 – 25 April 1915) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Throughout his life, he was always known as "Joe". He was a member of the First AIF, and was killed in action whilst landing at Gallipoli, Ottoman Turkey on 25 April 1915, during the Gallipoli campaign. His 152 League games became the most of any VFL player killed in World War I. Family The son of Arthur John Pearce, the headmaster of the Bendigo Grammar School, and Lena Margaret Pearce, née Mueller, he was born at Sandhurst (Bendigo) on 28 January 1885.
