Cleveland County, Arkansas
Cleveland County (formerly Dorsey County) is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. Its population was 8,689 at the 2010 U.S. census. The county seat and largest city is Rison. Cleveland County is included in the Pine Bluff, AR Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Little Rock-North Little Rock, AR Combined Statistical Area. History The Arkansas legislature established Dorsey County as Arkansas's 71st county on April 17, 1873, naming it for Stephen W. Dorsey, the U.S. Senator from Arkansas. When he was indicted for defrauding the Post Office, they renamed it on March 5, 1885, for Grover Cleveland, the newly elected President of the United States. The Battle of Mark's Mills, the pivotal engagement in the Union Army's ill-fated Camden Expedition during the U.S. Civil War, took place in what is now Cleveland County. Grover Cleveland
Stephen Grover Cleveland (March 18, 1837June 24, 1908) was an American lawyer and politician who served as the 22nd and 24th president of the United States from 1885 to 1889 and from 1893 to 1897. Cleveland is the only president in American history to serve two non-consecutive terms in office. He won the popular vote for three presidential elections—in 1884, 1888, and 1892—and was one of two Democrats (followed by Woodrow Wilson in 1912) to be elected president during the era of Republican presidential domination dating from 1861 to 1933. In 1881, Cleveland was elected mayor of Buffalo, and in 1882, he was elected governor of New York. Frederick Steele
Frederick Steele (January 14, 1819 – January 12, 1868) was a career military officer in the United States Army, serving as a major general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was most noted for retaking much of secessionist Arkansas for the Union cause, escaping the besieged port-city of Camden through successful deception tactics, and defeating Sterling Price and E. Kirby Smith at Jenkins Ferry. Early life Steele, son of Nathaniel & Dameras (Johnson) Steele, was born in Delhi, New York. He was an 1843 graduate of West Point, and later served in the Mexican–American War, where he participated in many engagements. Steele was meritoriously mentioned for distinguished bravery, and was promoted to first lieutenant in June 1848. He served in California during the Yuma War until 1853, and then to Fort Ridgely in Minnesota Territory and then Kansas Territory, and Nebraska Territory until the Civil War. Highway 54 (AR 54, Ark. 54, and Hwy. 54) is a designation for two state highways in Southeast Arkansas. One route of begins at US 65/US 165 in Dumas and runs west to US 425/ Highway 11. A second route of begins at Highway 114 and runs west to County Road 18 at the Grant/Jefferson county line. Both routes are maintained by the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT). Route description The route begins in Dewey at Macon Lake Road near Island number 81 on the Mississippi River. AR 35 runs through bayous and fields in Chicot County, briefly entering Desha County for a junction with AR 159/ AR 208 in Halley. Returning to Chicot County, AR 35 intersects the four-lane divided US 65/US 278 and US 165 east of Dermott, before entering the city. AR 35 serves Dermott as Speedway St before entering Drew County.
