Cleo A. Noel, Jr.
Cleo Allen Noel Jr. (August 6, 1918 – March 2, 1973) was a United States ambassador to Sudan who was murdered by the Black September (group), Black September Palestinian terrorist organization in the 1973 attack on the Saudi embassy in Khartoum. Early life Born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Noel spent his formative years in Moberly, Missouri. He attended Moberly Area Community College, Moberly Junior College and then University of Missouri, receiving a Bachelor of Arts, B.A. in History in 1939 and a master's degree, M.A. in the same subject in 1940. Career Noel worked briefly as an educator, teaching American history at the University of Missouri before joining the United States Navy in June 1941. During World War II he served as a gunnery officer providing security aboard merchant vessels throughout the Pacific Ocean and Persian Gulf; in fall 1945 Noel discharged from the navy at the rank of lieutenant commander. United States Ambassador To Sudan
The following is a list of United States ambassadors to Sudan. The first chief of mission sent by the United States was Arthur E. Beach, who presented his credentials in March 1956. From 1967 to 1972 the embassy was closed, and a U.S. Interest Section was opened in the Netherlands Embassy. In 1973 Ambassador Cleo A. Noel, Jr. was taken hostage and killed by the Black September Organization during the attack on the Saudi embassy in Khartoum. The embassy was again closed in 1996, but reopened in 2002. From 2002 to 2022, the United States posted a sequence of chargés d'affaires ''ad interim'' to the country. Lieutenant commander (also hyphenated lieutenant-commander and abbreviated Lt Cdr, LtCdr. or LCDR) is a commissioned officer rank in many navies. The rank is superior to a lieutenant and subordinate to a commander. George Curtis Moore
George Curtis Moore (September 7, 1925 – March 2, 1973) was an American diplomat who was assassinated during a terrorist attack on the Saudi embassy in Khartoum, Sudan. Diplomatic career in Sudan Moore was the principal foreign service officer in the United States Interest Section in Khartoum. The U.S. Embassy closed in 1967 during the Six-Day War. A U.S. Interest Section was established in the Netherlands embassy. Moore, a career foreign service officer, was assigned to the U.S. Interest Section as Principal Officer in July, 1969. He was an Arabist by training. Upon the re-opening of the U.S. Embassy on July 25, 1972, Moore became Chargé d'Affaires ad interim, which is the title given to the person acting as interim ambassador.
