The Clearwater River is a river in Douglas County of the U.S. state of Oregon. It is a roughly long tributary of the North Umpqua River, located about east of Roseburg in the Cascade Range. There are two notable waterfalls along the river. Upstream is Clearwater Falls, and downstream a few miles is Whitehorse Falls, the smaller of the two. Douglas County is one of the 36 counties in the U.S. state of Oregon. As of the 2020 census, the population was 111,201. The county seat is Roseburg. The county is named after Stephen A. Douglas, an American politician who supported Oregon statehood. Douglas County comprises the Roseburg, OR Micropolitan Statistical Area. History The area originally was inhabited by the Umpqua Indians, a grouping of natives who spoke a variety of Penutian and Athabaskan languages. Following the Rogue River Indian War in 1856, most of the remaining natives were moved by the government to the Grand Ronde Indian Reservation. However, seven families of Umpqua hid in the hills, eluding capture for many decades. They are now federally recognized as the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians. North Umpqua River
The North Umpqua River is a tributary of the Umpqua River, about long, in southwestern Oregon in the United States. It drains a scenic and rugged area of the Cascade Range southeast of Eugene, flowing through steep canyons and surrounded by large Douglas-fir forests. Renowned for its emerald green waters, it is considered one of the best fly fishing streams in the Pacific Northwest for anadromous fish. Cascade Range
The Cascade Range or Cascades is a major mountain range of western North America, extending from southern British Columbia through Washington and Oregon to Northern California. It includes both non-volcanic mountains, such as the North Cascades, and the notable volcanoes known as the High Cascades. Whitehorse Falls
Whitehorse Falls is a waterfall on the Clearwater River, in Douglas County in the U.S. state of Oregon. It is located within the Whitehorse Falls Campground, about 4 miles east of Toketee Lake along Oregon Route 138. The falls are a featured point along the route between the cities of Chemult and Roseburg. It is located in the heart of the Umpqua National Forest. It consists of a recreational trail that leads to the waterfall, a short distance from the confluence of the North Umpqua and Clearwater rivers. The picnic area near the parking lot has a viewing platform. Access to the waterfall and its trail is only through U.S. Highway 138.
