Class 1 World Powerboat Championship
The UIM Class 1 World Powerboat Championship (also known as Class 1) is an international motorboat racing competition for powerboats organized by the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM). It is the premier class of offshore powerboat racing in the world. ''Class 1'' is considered one of the most spectacular marine motorsports. A ''Class 1'' race-boat has twin inboard 1100hp engines and can reach speeds in excess of 257 km/h (160 mph). All boats are limited by a minimum weight of 4950 kg. The sport of powerboat racing has undergone unprecedented changes since the earliest recorded race in 1887 in Nice, France, organized by the Paris Sailing Club. The French also claimed the next two recorded races in 1903, a 62-mile race in Meulan on the River Seine organized by the Poissy Sailing Club and a 230-mile race from Paris to Trouville. It is a geometry-stabilized craft, deriving its stability from its wide beam, rather than from a ballasted keel as with a monohull boat. Catamarans typically have less hull volume, smaller displacement, and shallower draft (draught) than monohulls of comparable length. The two hulls combined also often have a smaller hydrodynamic resistance than comparable monohulls, requiring less propulsive power from either sails or motors. He was the second husband of Princess Caroline of Monaco; he died during a racing accident defending his 1990 Class 1 World Powerboat Championship title. Biography Fabio Buzzi was born in Lecco in 1943, from a family tied for centuries to the art of building and design. His powerboat racing career started in 1960. He graduated in mechanical engineering in 1971 from the Polytechnic University of Turin where he took a degree in mechanical engineering with a thesis on a self-constructed vehicle. He built his first race boat in 1974, a three-point hydroplane called "Mostro" (Monster), the first boat ever built in Kevlar 49. He set a world speed record (176.676 km/h) with this boat in the class S4 in 1978. On 17 September 2019, Buzzi, Luca Nicolini and Eric Hoorn were killed when their boat crashed against the San Nicoletto dam in Venice. Jerry Jacoby is a boat race driver. He is former UIM Offshore PowerBoat World Champion (1981) and APBA American Champion (1982). Career His first race was in the 1978 Tampa Bay Race. He rented one of Joel Halpern's 38' Cobra's (named 'Beep Beep'). Jacoby finished 3rd, despite suffering from an extremely slow start that placed him five minutes behind the leaders after the first lap. Jacoby then purchased the 35' Cigarette Anheuser Busch from Rocky Aoki, (this 35' Cigarette had formerly powered Tom Gentry to a World Championship in 1976). Named the 'Ajac Hawk', after his Elmont, New York-based transmission parts business, Jacoby finished 3rd in the next race, the Bacardi Trophy Race.
