Claire Emilie MacDonnel
Claire Emilie MacDonell, Marquise de Las Marismas de Guadalquivir (24 October 1817 – 23 April 1905) was a courtier of the French imperial court. She served as lady-in-waiting to Empress Eugénie de Montijo from 1853 to 1870. Life Early life Born on 24 October 1817, Claire Emilie MacDonell was the daughter of Hugh MacDonell and Ida Louise Ulrich. In 1841, Claire married Alexandre Aguado Moreno (1813–1861); the Marquis de Las Marismas de Guadalquivir. Alexandre died in a mental asylum, and Claire soon remarried her former brother-in-law, Onésipe Aguado, Vicomte Aguado (1830–1893), in 1863. Jane Mary Thorne, baronne de Pierres (1821 – 1873) was a French courtier of American origin. She served as lady-in-waiting (''dame de Palais'') to the empress of France, Eugénie de Montijo. Life Jane Thorne was born in New York as the daughter of the American millionaire Colonel Herman Thorne and Jane Mary Jauncey. Her father was a well known figure in the American millionaire colony in Paris during the reign of Louis Philippe I. Carmen Aguado, Duchesse de Montmorency (née Carmen-Ida-Marie; 28 June 1847 – 26 November 1880) was the only daughter of Alexandre Aguado Moreno and lady-in-waiting Claire Emilie MacDonnel. By marriage to Adalbert de Talleyrand Périgord, Duc de Montmorency, she was the Duchess of Montmorency. Carmen was the subject of a portrait by Franz Xaver Winterhalter. ''Empress Eugénie Surrounded by her Ladies in Waiting'' is an oil on canvas painting by the German artist Franz Xaver Winterhalter completed in 1855. It features depictions of the empress of France, Eugénie de Montijo, and eight of her ladies-in-waiting. The painting was displayed at the Palace of Fontainebleau during the regime of Eugénie's husband, Napoleon III. After Eugénie's exile to England, the painting was given to her, and later displayed in the entrance to her house at Farnborough Hill. It is currently on display at Château de Compiègne. History The painting was commissioned by Empress Eugénie de Montijo to be exhibited at the painting salon of the Exposition Universelle, which opened in May.
