Claes Söderquist

	Claes Söderquist Claes Söderquist (born February 10, 1939) is a Swedish artist and filmmaker. Söderquist filmed on Alcatraz in 1970 during the Occupation of Alcatraz by Indians of All Tribes. Life Claes Söderquist was born in Stockholm, Sweden, and grew up near Kristianstad in the South of Sweden. He studied painting at the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design (1960–1964), and at The Royal Institute of Art (1964–1969) in Stockholm. Söderquist has also been working in television, and as a curator and art advisor in Scandinavia. His work has been exhibited at Galerie Nordenhake, Berlin, and at Moderna Museet, Stockholm. A retrospective of his work at The Royal Academy of Art, Stockholm (2013) and aKristianstad Konsthallin 2014 brought attention to his work as one of the most important but little known experimental filmmakers in Sweden.... picture info	Occupation Of Alcatraz The Occupation of Alcatraz (November 20, 1969 – June 11, 1971) was a 19-month long protest when 89 Native Americans and their supporters occupied Alcatraz Island. The protest was led by Richard Oakes, LaNada Means, and others, while John Trudell served as spokesman. The group lived on the island together until the protest was forcibly ended by the U.S. government. The protest group chose the name Indians of All Tribes (IOAT) for themselves. IOAT claimed that, under the Treaty of Fort Laramie between the U.S. and the Lakota tribe, all retired, abandoned, or out-of-use federal land was to be returned to the Indians who once occupied it. As Alcatraz penitentiary had been closed on March 21, 1963, and the island had been declared surplus federal property in 1964, a number of Red Power activists felt that the island qualified for a reclamation by Indians. 	Lowell Nesbitt Lowell Blair Nesbitt (October 4, 1933 - July 8, 1993) was an American painter, draughtsman, printmaker, and sculptor. He served as the official artist for the NASA Apollo 9, and Apollo 13 space missions; in 1976 the United States Navy commissioned him to paint a mural in the administration building on Treasure Island spanning 26 feet x 251 feet, then the largest mural in the United States; and in 1980 the United States Postal Service honored Lowell Nesbitt by issuing four postage stamps depicting his paintings.
