Civil Society Leadership Institute
The Civil Society Leadership Institute (CSLI) is a not-for-profit training center founded in February 2007 as a civic education initiative of FIBRAS/Movimiento por Nicaragua—one of the largest pro-democracy movements in Central America. Its founding-director is Félix Maradiaga who is also a Young Global Leader (2009–2013) by the World Economic Forum and a Yale World Fellow (2008) by Yale University. Its mission is twofold: to foster transformational leadership based on the ideas of liberty and democracy and to educate grassroots activists about the fundamentals and importance of non-violent social change. To accomplish this mission, the Institute identifies recruits and trains grassroots democracy activists in Nicaragua. Nicaragua is a presidential republic, in which the President of Nicaragua is both head of state and head of government, and there is a multi-party system. Executive power is exercised by the government. Legislative power is vested in both the government and the National Assembly. The judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature. The American University ( Spanish: ''Universidad Americana (UAM)'') is a private university located in Managua, Nicaragua. It was founded in 1992 and offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in a variety of professional fields including law, medicine, business, and engineering. Grassroots Democracy
Grassroots democracy is a tendency towards designing political processes that shift as much decision-making authority as practical to the organization's lowest geographic or social level of organization. Grassroots organizations can have a variety of structures; depending on the type of organization and what the members want. These can be non-structured and non-hierarchical organizations that are run by all members, or by whichever member wishes to do something. To cite a specific hypothetical example, a national grassroots organization would place as much decision-making power as possible in the hands of local chapters or common members instead of the head office. It may come from the belief that hurting people, animals and/or the environment is unnecessary to achieve an outcome and it may refer to a general philosophy of abstention from violence.
