The cinema of Tunisia began in 1896, when the Lumière brothers began showing animated films in the streets of Tunis. History The first feature-length movie produced in North Africa, ''Les Cinq gentlemen maudits'' (''The Five Accursed Gentlemen''), was filmed in Tunisia by French director Luitz-Morat. In 1922, Tunisian Albert Samama-Chikli directed ''Zohra'' followed by ''Ain Al-Ghazal'' ('' The Girl from Carthage'') in 1924, making him one of the first native North African filmmakers. In 1966, the first Tunisian feature film (95 minutes) ''Al-Fajr'' (''The Dawn'') about the fight against French colonizers, was directed and produced by Omar Khlifi and shot on a 35 mm film. Naceur Ktari (born 1943) is a filmmaker from Tunisia. Early life and education Ktari was born in Sayada in Tunisia on 17 May 1943. Ktari studied film in Paris and later in Rome. He worked as an assistant on Raiders of the Lost Ark when Steven Spielberg was filming in Tunisia in 1981. The Locarno Film Festival is an annual film festival, held every August in Locarno, Switzerland. Founded in 1946, the festival screens films in various competitive and non-competitive sections, including feature-length narrative, documentary, short, avant-garde, and retrospective programs. The English Patient (film)
''The English Patient'' is a 1996 epic romantic war drama film directed by Anthony Minghella from his own script based on the 1992 novel of the same name by Michael Ondaatje and produced by Saul Zaentz. The eponymous protagonist, a man burned beyond recognition who speaks with an English accent, recalls his history in a series of flashbacks, revealing to the audience his true identity and the love affair he was involved in before the war.
