Ciaron Maher
Ciaron Maher (born 27 May 1981) is an Australian, Melbourne Cup winning, horse trainer. He grew up on his parent's dairy farm situated at Winslow, a town near Warrnambool, where he spent time around horses from a young age. For a few years, Maher rode as a jockey until the age of 23 when he was forced to quit riding due to his growing weight. Suspension from racing From the 9 October 2017, Maher was suspended from racing for 6 months and fined $75,000 after pleading guilty to "conduct prejudicial to the image, interests or welfare of racing". Racing stewards alleged that Maher failed to report suspicions he had regarding conman Peter Foster's ownership of horses Azkadellia, Hart, Loveable Rogue and Mr Simples. Sir Dragonet
Sir Dragonet (9 February 2016 – 16 October 2021) was an Irish bred thoroughbred racehorse that won two Group One races in Australia, most notably the 2020 W. S. Cox Plate. Background Sir Dragonet is the son of Camelot who was the European Champion Three-Year-Old Colt in 2012. His mother, Sparrow, was stakes placed when finishing third in the Ballyogan Stakes. She also produced Sir Dragonet's full-brother, Sir Lucan, winner of the Yeats Stakes. Racing career Sir Dragonet won his first two starts in 2019, a maiden race at Tipperary and then the Group III Chester Vase by a margin of eight lengths. The William Reid Stakes is a horse race of Moonee Valley Racing Club Group 1 thoroughbred racing at Weight for Age, for three year olds and older, run over a distance of 1200 metres at Moonee Valley Racecourse, Melbourne, Australia in the autumn. The Victoria Derby, also known as the Penfolds Victoria Derby, is a Victoria Racing Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds held under Set Weights conditions over a distance of 2,500 metres at Flemington Racecourse, in Melbourne, Australia scheduled annually on the first day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival. The South Australian Derby is a South Australian Jockey Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds, at set weights, run over a distance of 2,500 metres at Morphettville Racecourse in Adelaide, Australia during the SAJC Autumn Carnival. History The inaugural running of the race was on 5 January 1860 at Thebarton Racecourse which is located today in Mile End.
