Chuckwallas are lizards found primarily in arid regions of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Some are found on coastal islands. The six species of chuckwallas are all placed within the genus ''Sauromalus''; they are part of the iguanid family, Iguanidae. Taxonomy and etymology The generic name, ''Sauromalus'', is said to be a combination of two ancient Greek words: ''sauros'' meaning "lizard" and ''homalos'' (ὁμαλός) meaning "flat". The common name "chuckwalla" derives from the Shoshone word ''tcaxxwal'' or Cahuilla ''čaxwal'', transcribed by Spaniards as ''chacahuala''. Extant species Description Chuckwallas are stocky, wide-bodied lizards with flattened midsections and prominent bellies. Their tails are thick, tapering to a blunt tip. Chuckawalla Bill (August 2, 1875 – January 11, 1950) was a Spanish–American War veteran, a sapper in the British Army during World War I, a prospector, a cook, and vagabond. His birth name was William Anthony Simon, although he most frequently used the name Anthony W. Simmons. Later in life, he settled down in Palo Verde, California. He is buried in the Los Angeles National Cemetery, Los Angeles, California. The Chuckwalla Mountains are a mountain range in the transition zone between the Colorado Desert—Sonoran Desert and the Mojave Desert, climatically and vegetationally, in Riverside County of southern California. Chuckawalla Valley State Prison
Chuckawalla Valley State Prison (CVSP) is a male-only state prison located south of Interstate 10, in a detached section of Blythe, California in Riverside County. CVSP is adjacent to Ironwood State Prison. The prison is scheduled for closure. Facilities Chuckawalla Valley State Prison, opened in December 1988, is a Level II, Medium Security Facility covering . Primary housing consists of 11 open dormitory style building on four main yards. Each housing unit contains 340 beds. There is also a Level I yard which consists of two buildings with 200 beds each. The Administrative Segregation Unit (ASU) serves as a temporary home for those who are found guilty of severe rule violations while incarcerated. ASU is composed of 100 cells, each containing two beds. The annual budget of the prison is around . Little Chuckwalla Mountains
The Little Chuckwalla Mountains are a mountain range in southeastern Riverside County, California. The range lies southeast of the Chuckwalla Mountains, north of the Chocolate Mountains and south of I-10. Little Chuckwalla Mountains Wilderness The Little Chuckwalla Mountains Wilderness was established in 1994 by the U.S. Congress and consists of 28,052 acres managed by the Bureau of Land Management. This desert wilderness area protects the dry and rugged mountain range that rises to 2,100 feet (640 m). It is mostly in Riverside County with a small portion in Imperial County. The area is habitat for desert bighorn sheep and the desert tortoise.
