Christopher Nunn
Christopher Nunn (born 1983) is a British social documentary and portrait photographer. He had a solo exhibition of his work about the Donbas, Ukraine, at Impressions Gallery in Bradford. Life and work Nunn was born in Huddersfield. He earned a BA in photography at Bradford College. He makes social documentary and portrait photography. He has spent over a decade making work in Ukraine, predominantly in the Donbas region (he suffered a serious eye injury there after being caught up in a mortar attack). He has also made a long term photographic study of his friend the artist David Blackburn, and made work about a woman called Edith. Together with Kateryna Radchenko and Donald Weber, Nunn has created a series of newspaper-format publications called ''The Information Front'' that collates images by Ukrainian photographers and photojournalists of the war in Ukraine. Social Documentary Photography
Social documentary photography or concerned photography is the recording of what the world looks like, with a social and/or environmental focus. It is a form of documentary photography, with the aim to draw the public's attention to ongoing social issues. It may also refer to a socially critical genre of photography dedicated to showing the life of underprivileged or disadvantaged people. Origin of social documentary photography Social documentary photography has its roots in the 19th Century work of Henry Mayhew, Jacob Riis, and Lewis Hine, but began to take further form through the photographic practice of the Farm Security Administration (FSA) in the USA. Impressions Gallery
Impressions Gallery is an independent contemporary photography gallery in Bradford, England. It was established in 1972 and located in York until moving to Bradford in 2007. Impressions Gallery also runs a photography bookshop, publishes its own books and sells prints. It is one of the oldest venues for contemporary photography in Europe. Operations Impressions Gallery is a charity, a not-for-profit organisation, funded by Arts Council England and Bradford Metropolitan District Council. The gallery is host to a temporary exhibitions programme with on average six exhibitions each year, often solo retrospective shows of mid-career photographers, and also some group shows. Huddersfield
Huddersfield is a market town in the Kirklees district in West Yorkshire, England. It is the administrative centre and largest settlement in the Kirklees district. The town is in the foothills of the Pennines. The River Holme's confluence into the similar-sized Colne to the south of the town centre which then flows into the Calder in the north eastern outskirts of the town. The rivers around the town provided soft water required for textile treatment in large weaving sheds, this made it a prominent mill town with an economic boom in the early part of the Victorian era Industrial Revolution. Donbas
The Donbas or Donbass (, ; uk, Донба́с ; russian: Донба́сс ) is a historical, cultural, and economic region in eastern Ukraine. Parts of the Donbas are controlled by Russian separatist groups as a result of the Russo-Ukrainian War: the Donetsk People's Republic and the Luhansk People's Republic. The word ''Donbas'' is a portmanteau formed from "Donets Basin", an abbreviation of "Donets Coal Basin" ( uk, Донецький вугільний басейн, Donetskyi vuhilnyi basein; russian: Донецкий угольный бассейн, Donetskii ugolnyi bassein). David Blackburn (artist)
David Blackburn Order of the British Empire, MBE (22 June 193923 March 2016) was a British artist based in the north of England. He worked almost exclusively in the pastel medium and was noted for his highly evocative depictions of the landscape. Early life and education Blackburn was born in Huddersfield in 1939 to Wilfred, a painter and decorator, and Nora. As an only child, Blackburn spent his time painting and walking on the moors near his home; it is this period which he credits as helping him to the cultivate the ‘strong inner vision’ which is a major hallmark of his art. After securing a scholarship to the local grammar school, Blackburn studied at the Huddersfield School of Art for several years. Donald Weber (photographer)
Donald Weber (born 1973) is a Canadian photographer who focuses on the effects of world power. He is a member of VII Photo Agency. Weber's books include ''Bastard Eden, Our Chernobyl'' (2008), ''Interrogations'' (2011), ''Barricade: The EuroMaidan Revolt'' (with Arthur Bondar, 2015) and ''War Sand'' (2017). Side Gallery
Side Gallery is a photography gallery in Newcastle upon Tyne, run by Amber Film & Photography Collective. It opened in 1977 as Side Gallery and Cinema with a remit to show humanist photography "both by and commissioned by the group along with work it found inspirational". It is the only venue in the UK dedicated to documentary photography. Side Gallery is located at Amber's base in Side, a street in Quayside, Newcastle near the Tyne Bridge. Side Gallery closed on 9 April 2023 after the loss of its Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation status and funding in November 2022, combined with rising energy bills.
