Christopher Morley Park is a public, Nassau County-owned park in Roslyn Heights, New York. The park first opened in 1961. It is named for and dedicated after the late writer Christopher Morley, who lived a few blocks away in Roslyn Estates. It occupies of land, and was once part of the Nettie Ryan Estate. The County of Nassau purchased the estate for roughly $700,000 (1961 USD). Roslyn Heights, New York
Roslyn Heights is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of North Hempstead in Nassau County, on Long Island, in New York, United States. It is considered part of the Greater Roslyn area, which is anchored by the Incorporated Village of Roslyn. The population was 6,577 at the 2010 census. History Roslyn Heights saw a major economic boom in the 1860s shortly after the Long Island Rail Road's Oyster Bay Branch was built through and opened in the area. Starting in 1892, corporation was started to develop the northwestern section of the hamlet. Members of this development corporation included lawyers, bankers, and developers. This development, which was named Roslyn Highlands, was largely unsuccessful. Christopher Darlington Morley (May 5, 1890 – March 28, 1957) was an American journalist, novelist, essayist and poet. He also produced stage productions for a few years and gave college lectures.''Online Literature'' Biography Morley was born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. His father, Frank Morley, was a mathematics professor at Haverford College; his mother, Lilian Janet Bird, was a violinist who provided Christopher with much of his later love for literature and poetry. In 1900, the family moved to Baltimore, Maryland. In 1906 Christopher entered Haverford College, graduating in 1910 as valedictorian. He then went to New College, Oxford, for three years on a Rhodes scholarship, studying modern history. In 1913 Morley completed his Oxford studies and moved to New York City, New York. Roslyn Estates is a village in the Town of North Hempstead in Nassau County, on the North Shore of Long Island, in New York, United States. It is considered part of the Greater Roslyn area, which is anchored by the Incorporated Village of Roslyn. The population was 1,318 at the 2020 census. History Roslyn Estates was first developed in the early 20th Century (circa 1908) by Dean Alvord, who also developed Prospect Park South in Brooklyn and Belle Terre in Port Jefferson. It was nicknamed "The Eden of Long Island" when originally developed, due to the community's design and setting. In 1931, residents decided to try incorporating Roslyn Estates as a village, due to the fact that the original deed restrictions were set to expire around that time. Bay Park is a Nassau County-owned park in Bay Park, in Nassau County, on Long Island, in New York, United States. Description Bay Park entered Nassau County's park system in 1947. The park is roughly in total area. Amenities at the park include a golf course, a playground, picnic areas, sports fields, a dog park, and fishing and boating facilities. The golf course within Bay Park consists of 9 holes. A controversy took place in the late 1960s regarding this golf course. Many Nassau residents grew frustrated over fact that the golf course was closed; the closure resulted from cuts to Nassau's budget, as the funds needed to hire personnel were not available. Although the golf course was eventually opened that summer during daylight hours, other areas of the park would remain closed for the season due to the funding issues. Cantiague Park is a public park maintained by the Nassau County Department of Parks, Recreation, and Museums, located in Hicksville, New York. History Cantiague Park was opened by Nassau County to the public in 1961 in response to a growing population. It was the second major park opened by the county, the first being Eisenhower Park. Several of the facilities at the park were designed by Valley Stream-based Frederic P. Wiedersum Associates.
