Christine Defraigne
Christine Defraigne (born 1962) is a Belgian politician and a member of the MR. She was the President of the Belgian Senate, in office 2014 to 2018. Political views In 2009 Christine Defraigne proposed a nationwide ban of the burqa. She has also called the burkini a "rejection of the freedom of women". Her proposal (together with Joseph Arens) to stop slaughtering animals without anesthesia (like ritual slaughter) resulted in a ban on this practice in Wallonia. She is a feminist. Criticism In 2016 she was criticized for wearing a headscarf while visiting Tehran. Darya Safai ( fa, دریا صفایی, born 7 April 1975) is an Iranian-Belgian author, human rights activist and politician who has been a member of the Belgian Chamber of Representatives for the New Flemish Alliance since 2019. Early life and education She grew up in Iran after the Iranian Revolution, revolution of 1979. She was a final-year dental student at the University of Tehran in 1999, when she participated in the Iran student protests, July 1999, student protest together with her husband Saeed Bashirtash. As a result, she was arrested and wound up in prison. After she was temporarily released on bail, she decided to flee together with her husband via Turkey to Belgium. She was sentenced in absence to two years of imprisonment by the revolutionary court of the Islamic Republic of Iran. In Belgium she graduated again as a dentist.
