Christina Jane Corrie
Christina Jane Corrie (née MacPherson, later Thynne) (1867–1937) was the founder of the Queensland Women's Electoral League. Early life Christina Jane MacPherson was born on 26 July 1867 at Helensburg-on-Clyde, Scotland, the daughter of James Drummond MacPherson. She married Brisbane architect Leslie Gordon Corrie on 25 March 1899 at St Thomas's Church, Enfield, Sydney. Politics Christina Corrie was involved in the National Council of Women of Queensland. Her husband Leslie Corrie was an alderman and mayor of the Town of Brisbane. As his wife, Christina served as lady mayoress. She took advantage of her public prominence to launch the Queensland Women's Electoral League in 1903 to advance the cause of women's suffrage in Queensland. Leslie Corrie
Leslie Gordon Corrie (1859–1918) was an architect and the List of Mayors and Lord Mayors of Brisbane, mayor of Brisbane, Queensland from 1902 to 1903. A number of his architectural works are now heritage-listed. Early life Leslie Gordon Corrie was born in Hobart, Tasmania in 1859, the son of James Afleck Corrie of Kirkcudbright and Mary Campbell of Edinburgh. He worked as an architect, first in Hobart and then in Launceston, Tasmania, Launceston. In 1886, he moved to Brisbane. From 1888 to 1892, he was in partnership with his former employer, Henry Hunter (architect), Henry Hunter trading as "Hunter and Corrie". From 1898 to 1905, he was in partnership with G.H.M. The Town of Brisbane was a local government area for Brisbane in Queensland, Australia from 1859 to 1903. History The Municipality of Brisbane was gazetted on 25 May 1859 and proclaimed by the Governor of New South Wales on 7 September 1859. The first local government area in Queensland, Brisbane was the only one incorporated prior to the establishment of Queensland as a separate colony. Women's Suffrage
Women's suffrage is the right of women to vote in elections. Beginning in the start of the 18th century, some people sought to change voting laws to allow women to vote. Liberal political parties would go on to grant women the right to vote, increasing the number of those parties' potential constituencies. National and international organizations formed to coordinate efforts towards women voting, especially the International Woman Suffrage Alliance (founded in 1904 in Berlin, Germany). Many instances occurred in recent centuries where women were selectively given, then stripped of, the right to vote. Andrew Joseph Thynne
Andrew Joseph Thynne (30 October 1847 – 27 February 1927) was a lawyer and politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Council and Attorney-General of Queensland. Early life Thynne son of Edward Thynne, was born in County Clare, Ireland. He was educated at the Christian Brothers' school, Ennistymon, by a private tutor, and at Queen's College, Galway, where he won a classical scholarship. He came to Brisbane with his parents in 1864, but the family soon after removed to Ipswich. Thynne entered the Queensland civil service, resigned later to take up the study of law, and was admitted as a solicitor in 1873, where he prospered in his profession.
