Chris Granner
Christopher P. Granner (born 1957 in Mt. Kisco, New York) is a freelance music composer, best known for composing music for video games and pinball games. Career and biography Granner's father is organist/pianist, so he was interested in music since his childhood. He studied composition and computer sound/music at University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign under prolific musicians Ben Johnston, Herbert Brün, Salvatore Martirano and Scott Wyatt. After finishing university with a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Fine Arts in music composition he moved to Evanston-located Northwestern University's music lab. There Granner heard that Williams Electronics (which evolved in Midway Games) was looking for composer, and he took the job and became leading composer in coin-op and pinball industry. WMS Industries, Inc. was an American electronic gaming and amusement manufacturer in Enterprise, Nevada. It was merged into Scientific Games in 2016. WMS's predecessor was the Williams Manufacturing Company, founded in 1943 by Harry E. Williams. However, the company that became WMS Industries was formally founded in 1974 as Williams Electronics, Inc. Williams initially was a manufacturer of pinball machines. In 1964, Williams was acquired by jukebox manufacturer Seeburg Corp. and reorganized as Williams Electronics Manufacturing Division. ''FunHouse'' is a pinball machine designed by Pat Lawlor and released in November 1990 by Williams Electronics. Starring a talking ventriloquist dummy named Rudy, the game is themed after the concept of an amusement park funhouse. ''FunHouse'' is one of the last Williams games to use an alphanumeric display; the company switched to dot matrix the following year. Description ''FunHouses primary feature is the talking head of a ventriloquist dummy, named Rudy, located in the top right corner of the playfield. Diner is a pinball machine produced by Williams in 1990. The objective of the game is to serve all customers in a diner. The table was marketed with the slogan ''"It's fresh! It's fast! It's hot!"'' Gameplay One to four players can play. Each player gets 3 balls per game. Serving all 5 customers (Haji, Babs, Boris, Pepe, and Buck) lights the "Dine Time" jackpot. It starts at 1 million points, and can be advanced up to 12 million points. Playfield The playfield includes 2 yellow flippers, a plunger, and 2 signature cross ramps, which is common in early 1990s pinball machines designed by Mark Ritchie. ''Whirlwind'' is a pinball machine produced by Williams in 1990 and was one of the last Williams System 11b games. It was designed by Pat Lawlor, who created a previous natural disaster-themed pinball for Williams, '' Earthshaker!''. Gameplay ''Whirlwind'' is distinguished by three playfield rotating discs, and a fan topper that blows wind on the player at certain times in the game. The objective in ''Whirlwind'' is to move the storm using the compass targets to light ball locks for multiball. In multiball, a progressive jackpot can be scored by making left ramp shots from the upper right flipper. Police Force is a 1989 Williams pinball machine. The pinball machine was initially supposed to be released as Batman pinball, the police car was to be the Batmobile and the Jail was to be the Bat Cave. The machine features anthropomorphic jungle animals in the roles of police and robbers. The game features scoring by hitting each of the targets of the animals. As the targets of each animal are struck, a light of each lights up showing them in jail. The game also features scoring on a center ramp with unlimited shots of one million each after a series of shots, and a multi-ball. ''Taxi'' is a pinball machine designed by Mark Ritchie and Python Anghelo. It was released in 1988 by Williams Electronics. Gameplay The goal of the game is to pick up five passengers: Pinbot, Gorbie, Lola (or Marilyn Monroe in the original version), Dracula, and Santa. The passengers are represented by lighted illustrations in the center of the lower end of the playfield and are also featured on the backglass. If Carry Passengers is not lit, all passengers are lost when the ball drains. The original game featured Marilyn Monroe with her recognizable blonde hair on the backglass. Steven Scott Ritchie (born February 13, 1950) is an American pinball and video game designer. His career began in the 1970s, Ritchie holds the record for best-selling pinball designer in history. He has been called "The Master of Flow" due to the emphasis in his designs on ball speed, loops, and long smooth shots. Ritchie was also the original voice of Shao Kahn in the ''Mortal Kombat'' fighting game series, serving as the announcer of ''Mortal Kombat II'' (1993), ''Mortal Kombat 3'' (1995), and the updates to ''Mortal Kombat 3''.
