Chopin Foundation Of The United States
Founded by Blanka Rosenstiel in 1977, the Chopin Foundation of the United States provides performance opportunities for young American pianists, exchange and scholarship programs as well as awards. Every five years the Foundation hosts the National Chopin Piano Competition (traditionally held in Miami, FL), the only major U.S. competition open to American citizens only. The Foundation pays for top winners of the U.S. competition to fly to Warsaw, Poland and compete in the International Frederick Chopin Piano Competition, the oldest and one of the most important competitions in the world. The 2005 National Chopin Piano Competition awarded Shanghai-born Mei-Ting Sun the first prize. Blanka Rosenstiel
Blanka Aldona Rosenstiel (born 1931) is a Polish American philanthropist. She currently serves as the president, chairwoman, and chief executive of The American Institute of Polish Culture (AIPC) and president of the Chopin Foundation of the United States. Early life Blanka Aldona Rosenstiel (née Wdowiak) was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1931 to Wacław Wdowiak, a postal worker, and Irena Wdowiak (née Karaszewka). She was born into a Catholic family. In 1944 during the Warsaw Uprising, her father was taken to Auschwitz concentration camp, and Rosenstiel, her mother, and one of her two brothers became slave laborers at the Frankfurt railroad station, laying bricks. Other members of her family were also taken to other labor and concentration camps. Rosenstiel, her mother, and her brother were liberated from Niederhausen concentration camp in 1945 by the Allied Powers. However, her father died in Magdeburg labor camp in Germany. International Frederick Chopin Piano Competition
The International Chopin Piano Competition ( pl, Międzynarodowy Konkurs Pianistyczny im. Fryderyka Chopina), often referred to as the Chopin Competition, is a piano competition held in Warsaw, Poland. It was initiated in 1927 and has been held every five years since 1955. It is one of the few competitions devoted entirely to the works of a single composer, in this case, Frédéric Chopin. The competition is currently organized by the Fryderyk Chopin Institute. The Chopin Competition is one of the most prestigious competitions in classical music, often launching the careers of its winners overnight through major concert dates and lucrative recording contracts. Mei-Ting Sun
Mei-Ting Sun (), born 14 March 1981, is a classical pianist. A native of Shanghai, Sun arrived in New York at the age of nine. He entered the Professional Children's School and the Mannes College of Music, where he studied ear training with Marie Powers, theory with Robert Cuckson, and piano with Edward Aldwell. He has since received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the Mannes College of Music. Currently, he is a C.V. Starr Doctoral Fellow at the Juilliard School, studying with Robert McDonald. Sun was the first prize winner of the 7th National Chopin Piano Competition of the U.S in 2005 and the first International Piano-e-Competition in 2002. Named one of the Musicians of the Year 1996 by the ''Village Voice'' at age 15, the now 37-year-old pianist has performed in many of New York's concert halls, including Alice Tully Hall, where his performance of Ravel's Concerto in G was praised by The ''New York Times'' as a "stunningly fluid reading." Martha Argerich (; Eastern Catalan: ɾʒəˈɾik born 5 June 1941) is an Argentine classical concert pianist. She is widely considered to be one of the greatest pianists of all time. Early life and education Argerich was born in Buenos Aires. Her paternal ancestors were Spaniards from Catalonia who had been based in Buenos Aires since the 18th century. Her maternal grandparents were Jewish immigrants from the Russian Empire, who settled in Colonia Villa Clara in Argentina's Entre Ríos Province, one of the colonies established by Baron de Hirsch and the Jewish Colonization Association. The provenance of the name '' Argerich'' is Catalonia. A precocious child, Argerich began kindergarten at the age of two years and eight months, where she was the youngest child.
