Cholavaram
Cholavaram, also spelled Sholavaram, is a suburb north of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. It is popular as Sholavaram and is also known for the Cholavaram lake. Adjoining the lake, there was an defunct Air Force Airfield which was used as a motor racing track. It was an air strip used during World War II; After the Madras Motor Sports Club was formed in mid-50s, it selected Sholavaram to conduct its racing events. Since then racing events took place every year and continued till late 1980s until the Madras Motor Sports Club built a new track at Irungattukottai, Sriperumbudur, Chennai. The famous Malayalam actor Jayan was killed in a helicopter accident here during the shooting of his film Kolilakkam on 16 November 1980. Cholavaram Lake
Sholavaram aeri, or Sholavaram lake, is located in Ponneri taluk of Thiruvallur district, Tamil Nadu, India. It is one of the rain-fed reservoirs from where water is drawn for supply Chennai city from this lake to Puzhal lake through canals. History Sholavaram lake was built prior to 1877, during British Raj, British rule. It is primarily known for its lake and motor racing. The lake is one of the main water sources for Chennai. The race track near Sholavaram lake used to be an air strip during World War II. Racing events were conducted from the early 1960s to the late 1980s. Racing events took place during February of every year. The track was T-shaped so the problem was discussed with rac in london and the Madras Motor club was advised that the width of the track should not be more than 35 feet. Madras Motor Sports Club
Madras Motor Sports Club is an Indian auto racing club founded in 1952 and based in Chennai, India. Madras Motor Sports Club with its history of over 50 years is the reason that Chennai can be called the epicentre of motor racing in India. Madras Motor Sports Club, located at the village of Irungattukottai near Sriperumbudur, Chennai organises world class racing events every year, including the South India Rally and the All India Motor Race Meet. Irungattukottai is a fast emerging neighbourhood of Chennai, strategically on the Chennai-Bangalore Highway (NH4). It is approximately 34 km from downtown Chennai. Chennai International Airport is an international airport serving the city of Chennai, Tamil Nadu and its metropolitan area. It is located in Tirusulam, southwest of the city centre. Chennai International Airport is the sixth busiest airport in India and third busiest airport for international traffic in India.
