Choccolocco
Choccolocco is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Calhoun County, Alabama, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 2,804. It was founded in 1832. The name Choccolocco is an anglicization of the Creek words "chahko lago" ("big shoals") or "choko rakko" ("big house"); sources vary. The community gained brief notoriety in 2001 when ''The Daily Show'' aired a piece on the "Choccolocco Monster", a part of local folklore concerning sightings of a mysterious creature in the area in the late 1960s. An October 2001 article in the ''Anniston Star'' newspaper revealed that the creature was, in fact, local resident Neal Williamson. Calhoun County is a County (United States), county in the east central part of the U.S. state of Alabama. As of the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, the population was 116,441. Its county seat is Anniston, Alabama, Anniston. It was named in honor of John C. Calhoun, noted politician and United States Senate, US Senator from South Carolina. The Alabama Forestry Commission (AFC) is the forest management agency for the U.S. state of Alabama. It was created as a state agency by an act of the Alabama Legislature in 1924. The Muscogee language (Muskogee, ''Mvskoke'' in Muscogee), also known as Creek, is a Muskogean languages, Muskogean language spoken by Muscogee (Creek) and Seminole people, primarily in the US states of Oklahoma and Florida.
