San Francisco de Chiu Chiu, or simply Chiu Chiu, is a village located about northeast of the city of Calama, in El Loa Province of Chile's northern Antofagasta Region. Calama, Chile
Calama is a city and commune in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile. It is the capital of El Loa Province, part of the Antofagasta Region. Calama is one of the driest cities in the world with average annual precipitation of just . The River Loa, Chile's longest, flows through the city. Calama has a population of 147,886 (2012 census). The commune also encompasses the Quechua communities of Estación San Pedro, Toconce and Cupo; and the Lickan-antay communities of Taira, Conchi Viejo, Lasana, San Francisco de Chiu Chiu, Aiquina-Turi, and Caspana. In 2003 the nearby town of Chuquicamata, once the largest open-pit copper mine in the world, was dismantled citing environmental reasons and encroachment from the mine's expansion. Antofagasta Region
The Antofagasta Region ( es, Región de Antofagasta, ) is one of Chile's sixteen first-order administrative divisions. The second-largest region of Chile in area, it comprises three provinces, Antofagasta, El Loa and Tocopilla. It is bordered to the north by Tarapacá, by Atacama to the south, and to the east by Bolivia and Argentina. The region's capital is the port city of Antofagasta; another one of its important cities is Calama. The region's main economic activity is copper mining in its giant inland porphyry copper systems. Loa River
The Loa River (Spanish: Río Loa) is a U-shaped river in Chile's northern Antofagasta Region. At long, it is the country's longest river and the main watercourse in the Atacama Desert. Course The Loa's sources are located on Andean mountain slopes at the foot of Miño Volcano. The upper Loa basin is flanked on the west by a ridge with elevations that reach above , whereas to the east lies a volcanic chain, which separates it from endorheic basins as that of Salar de Ascotán. The river flows south on an elevated plateau, for about , to the oasis of Chiu Chiu (CHEE-oo CHEE-oo). Salado River (Antofagasta, Chile)
Salado River is a river of Chile located in El Loa Province, Antofagasta Region which is in the northern part of the country. It is formed at the confluence of over 30 spring branches emerging from El Tatio area. Flowing briefly south, it turns west and passes through a canyon carved in volcanic rocks. In its middle course, the river receives the ''Toconce River'' (originated at the foot of Linzor volcano) from the north and the ''Caspana River'' from the south. In this area, a part of the flow of its affluents is diverted for providing water for domestic consumption in Antofagasta and Tocopilla, among other localities. After being joined by the two streams before mentioned, the Salado River enters in a floodplain area, which is used for pasturage by the inhabitants of the nearby localities, including Toconce, Caspana and Aiquina. The Iglesia de San Francisco is a Catholic Church located in the commune of Calama, El Loa, Antofagasta Region, Chile. Built approximately in 1650, it is the oldest church building in Chile. It was declared as a National Monument in 1951. History The church of San Francisco de Chiu Chiu was built in the mid 17th century. It is adjacent to the square of Chiu Chiu. In 1965, the Architecture Branch of the Ministerio de Obras Públicas de Chile carried out a renovation project, which included the replacement of the wooden belfries with two stone belfries on the main facade. The first ones, in turn, had replaced the original belfries, which collapsed in the 19th century. Description The church has a Latin cross plan. The nave is 27 metres long and 5 metres wide.
