Chittagong-12 is a constituency represented in the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) of Bangladesh since 2014 by Shamsul Haque Chowdhury of the Awami League. Boundaries The constituency encompasses all but five union parishads of Patiya Upazila: Bara Uthan, Char Lakshya, Char Patharghata, Juldha, and Sikalbaha. Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu
Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu (1 May 1945 – 4 November 2012) was a Bangladesh Awami League politician and a former Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Chittagong-12 constituency. He was awarded Independence Award in 2021 posthumously. He was also the principal accused of the murder of businessman Humayun Zahir and was infamous for his role in capturing United Commercial Bank Ltd putting the board members at gunpoint. Early life Babu was born on 1 May 1945. He was elected to East Pakistan provincial assembly from Anwara-West Patia in 1970. He was involved with Bangladesh Chhatra League as a student. During Bangladesh Liberation war, he organized Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra in Chittagong. Shamsul Haque Chowdhury
Shamsul Haque Chowdhury () (born 20 July 1957) is a Bangladesh Awami League politician and a present Member of Parliament from Chittagong-12. He is also the general secretary of Chittagong based football club Chittagong Abahani. Early life Chowdhury was born 20 July 1957 in Shovonandi, Patiya Upazila, Chittagong District. Career Chowdhury was a councilor of Bangladesh Football Federation in 2008. In April 2008, before the elections of Bangladesh Football Federation, he filed a motion challenging the candidacy of Ashraf Uddin Ahmed Chunnu, Golam Rabbani Helal, and Kazi Salahuddin. His motion was dismissed by the election commission of the federation. In July 2008, he was made a member of the development committee of Bangladesh Football Federation. Mokhtar Ahmad
Mokhtar Ahmad (31 August 1943 – 21 October 2006) was a politician from the Chittagong District of Bangladesh and an elected a member of parliament for Chittagong-12. He was an organizer of the Bangladesh Liberation War, Liberation War of Bangladesh. Early life Mokhtar Ahmad was born on 31 August 1943 in the village of Ratakhord Mozaffarabad in the Sadhanpur union of Banshkhali Upazila, Banshkhali in Chittagong District, Chittagong district. Career Mokhtar joined politics in 1962. He was a freedom fighter. In Sector 1, he was the regional captain of Banshkhali, Anwara and Kutubdia. He was elected to parliament from Chittagong-12 as a Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal candidate in 1988. He was defeated as the candidate of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal from Chittagong-15 constituency in the first parliamentary elections of 1973. 2018 Bangladeshi General Election
General elections were held in Bangladesh on 30 December 2018 to elect 300 directly-elected members of the Jatiya Sangsad. The result was a landslide victory for the Awami League led by Sheikh Hasina. According to political scientist Ali Riaz, the elections were not free and fair. The BBC News reported that they were marred by violence and allegations of vote rigging. Opposition leader Kamal Hossain rejected the results, calling it "farcical" and demanding fresh elections to be held under a neutral government. Jatiya Sangsad
The Jatiya Sangsad ( bn, জাতীয় সংসদ, lit=National Parliament, translit=Jatiyô Sôngsôd), often referred to simply as the ''Sangsad'' or JS and also known as the House of the Nation, is the supreme legislative body of Bangladesh. The current parliament of Bangladesh contains 350 seats, including 50 seats reserved exclusively for women. Elected occupants are called Member of Parliament, or MP. The 11th National Parliamentary Election was held on 30 December 2018. Elections to the body are held every five years, unless a parliament is dissolved earlier by the President of Bangladesh. 1988 Bangladeshi General Election
General elections were held in Bangladesh on 3 March 1988. They were boycotted by several major parties, including the Bangladesh Awami League, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, the Communist Party of Bangladesh, Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Krishak Sramik Awami League, the National Awami Party (Muzaffar) and the Workers Party of Bangladesh. General elections were held in Bangladesh on 27 February 1991. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) emerged as the largest party in parliament, winning 140 of the 300 directly-elected seats. General elections were held in Bangladesh on 1 October 2001. The 300 single-seat constituencies of the Jatiya Sangsad were contested by 1,935 candidates representing 54 parties and including 484 independents.
