Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu
Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu (1 May 1945 – 4 November 2012) was a Bangladesh Awami League politician and a former Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Chittagong-12 constituency. He was awarded Independence Award in 2021 posthumously. He was also the principal accused of the murder of businessman Humayun Zahir and was infamous for his role in capturing United Commercial Bank Ltd putting the board members at gunpoint. Early life Babu was born on 1 May 1945. He was elected to East Pakistan provincial assembly from Anwara-West Patia in 1970. He was involved with Bangladesh Chhatra League as a student. During Bangladesh Liberation war, he organized Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra in Chittagong. Career Babu was elected to Parliament on in 1986, 1991, and 2008 from Chittagong-12 as a Bangladesh Awami League candidate. United Commercial Bank PLC (UCB) is a private commercial bank in Bangladesh that is not a foreign bank (FCB) and is listed in Dhaka's stock exchange, as well as the Chittagong Stock Exchange. It was established in 1983, twelve years after independence. History The bank was incorporated on 26 June 1983. The government owns shares in the bank. The bank is listed in both Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) by 1986 and Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) by 1995. On 8 April 1993, a director of the United Commercial Bank, Humayun Zahir, was shot dead following a dispute with other bank directors. Another director, Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu, was accused of the murder. Babu fled the country and returned in 1996 after the Awami League government came to power replacing the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. Mount Elizabeth Hospital, known colloquially as Mount E, is a 345-bed private hospital in Singapore operated by Parkway Health. Construction began in 1976 and the hospital officially opened on 8 December 1979. The hospital specialises in cardiology, oncology, and neuroscience, among other tertiary services. It is also recognised as a multi-organ transplant speciality hospital. Since 1995, it has been owned by Parkway Holdings Ltd.
