Chilhowee Inn
Chilhowee Inn was an inn built by the Schlosser Leather Company in 1902 in Walland, Tennessee. It was constructed as a five room cottage to house executives visiting the nearby tannery. This was the last stop of the Knoxville and Augusta line of the Southern Railway System, and the starting point for the Little River Railroad. The Inn was named by Mrs. Rachel Fisher, wife of the builder, Mr. A. J. Fisher who was also superintendent of the tannery. One year after completion, an inn was added to the structure to provide accommodations for additional guests and teachers. The inn was used as a boarding house for teachers at the public school during the school year. The rent was paid for by the tannery. After the tannery shut down in the early 1930s, the inn became a nationally renowned lodge for people visiting the newly formed Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Walland is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Blount County, Tennessee, in the Southeastern United States. Its population was 259 as of the 2010 census. Walland is the site of a post office and is the place name associated with zip code 37886, which covers an area beyond the Walland community. Geography Walland is situated in Miller's Cove, an enclosed valley in the northwestern foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. Little River Railroad (Tennessee)
The Little River Railroad is a historic class III railroad that operated between Maryville and Elkmont, Tennessee, during the period 1901 to 1939. History The Little River Railroad ("the LRR") was established as a subsidiary of the Little River Lumber Company on November 21, 1901. Colonel W. B. Townsend was the owner of both entities. The LRR was primarily a logging railroad. The Little River Lumber Company owned over of prime forest land in Blount and Sevier counties. By the time Little River Lumber Company completed operations in 1939, it had harvested two billion board feet (4,700,000 m³) of lumber from the Little River watershed. The LRR typically would build a line into an area, complete the logging, then remove the line. In all, the LRR built of track, none of which remains. Great Smoky Mountains National Park is an American national park in the southeastern United States, with parts in North Carolina and Tennessee. Blount County is a county located in the East Tennessee Grand Division of the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2020 census, its population was 135,280. The county seat is Maryville, which is also the county's largest city. Blount County is included in the Knoxville, Tennessee metropolitan statistical area.
