Chiesa Del Voto, Modena
The church of Chiesa del Voto or Votive Church of Modena is a Baroque style church in the city of Modena, Italy. It is located near the town center, and was built to give thanks for the cessation of the plague of 1630. Older texts cite a full name of the church of the Madonna Santissima del voto della Città. History Work on the structure began in 1634, under the direction of Cristoforo Malagola, also called ''il Galaverna''. The church is modeled after the church of San Salvatore in Bologna. The dome recalls the Basilica of the Basilica della Ghiara in Reggio. Among the canvases in the church are those depicting the events of the ''Intercession during Plague'' by Ludovico Lana. The canvas has the Madonna beside St Roch and St Sebastian, two saints traditionally affiliated with healing from the plague, as well as Saint Homobonus, also a patron saint of the city. Adeodato Malatesta (May 6, 1806 – December 24, 1891) was an Italian painter, trained in a grand Neoclassical style, depicting mostly of sacred and historic subjects. Biography He was born in Modena. His father was a captain in the Granducal army of Modena. Francesco Stringa
Francesco Stringa (1578–1615) was an Italian painter of the early- Baroque era, active mainly near his native city of Modena. He apprenticed initially, in 1595, in the Roman studio of Federico Zuccari, but soon came under the influence of the ascendant style of the Carracci. He returns in 1602–1606, to work for the Este court at Modena. In 1607, he worked with Ercole dell'Abate in decorating the ceiling of the Sala del Consiglio in the Palazzo Comunale. He also painted an ''Annunciation'' for Formigine and a ''Madonna and saints'' for the parish church of Fanano. In 1608, he became court painter for Duke Ranuccio I Farnese in Parma, where he painted a number of canvases now in the Capodimonte Museum in Naples. He died in Parma. Saint Homobonus ( it, Sant'Omobono, german: Sankt Gutmann, lmo, San Mobon) is the patron saint of business people, tailors, shoemakers, and clothworkers, as well as of Cremona, Italy. He was canonized in 1199 at the urgent request of the citizens of Cremona. He died on November 13, 1197 and his feast day is celebrated on November 13. He was a merchant from Cremona, northern Italy. Luigi Lanzi (14 June 1732 – 30 March 1810) was an Italian art historian and archaeologist. When he died he was buried in the church of the Santa Croce at Florence by the side of Michelangelo. Biography Born in Treia, Lanzi was educated as a priest. He entered the Order of the Jesuits, resided at Rome and in 1773 was appointed keeper of the galleries of Florence, where he became president of the Accademia della Crusca. Baroque Architecture
Baroque architecture is a highly decorative and theatrical style which appeared in Italy in the early 17th century and gradually spread across Europe. It was originally introduced by the Catholic Church, particularly by the Jesuits, as a means to combat the Reformation and the Protestant church with a new architecture that inspired surprise and awe. Ludovico Lana (c. 1597–1646) was an Italian painter of the Baroque period, mainly active in Modena, where he died in 1646. He is also known as ''Lodovico Lana''. He was the director of the Accademia Ducale of Modena. He is said to have been born in Codigoro to a Ferrarese merchant, whose family was originally from Brescia.
