Chiefs Manawa
The Chiefs Manawa (officially called the Waitomo Chiefs Manawa for sponsorship reasons) are a New Zealand women's professional rugby union team based in Hamilton, New Zealand that competes in the Super Rugby Aupiki competition. Chiefs Manawa won the inaugural season of the Super Rugby Aupiki competition. They went undefeated throughout the season and beat the Blues Women 35–0 in the final round to claim the title. History Historic clash The Chiefs and Blues women created history when they clashed in the first-ever women's Super Rugby match in New Zealand on 1 May 2021. The game was hosted by the Blues at Eden Park and was played as a double header before the Round 10 Super Rugby Aotearoa match between their men's teams. The Chiefs were sponsored by the Waitomo Group, which is a Waikato-based fuel company, and were named Waitomo Wahine Chiefs. Super Rugby Aupiki
Super Rugby Aupiki is a professional women's rugby union club competition in New Zealand. Its inaugural season was held in March 2022. It is a steppingstone between the Farah Palmer Cup and the Black Ferns. Aupiki translates as ‘''the ascent to the upper most realm''’. Format Initially the four teams were supposed to have three regular season matches with one home and away game, and one Super Round fixture. The top two teams at the end of the three rounds would contest the final. However, the competition was reformatted as a round robin fixture because of the impact of COVID-19. All the squads were strongly affected with player isolations and COVID-19 cases. The inaugural champion would be crowned based on their competition points after the final round. Matatū (rugby Union)
Matatū is a New Zealand women's professional rugby union team that competes in the Super Rugby Aupiki competition. Matatū represents the South Island, specifically the regions covered by the Crusaders and the Highlanders. They are governed by the Crusaders. They were crowned champions of the 2023 Super Rugby Aupiki season. History Name, logo and colours The team’s name, logo and colours were officially unveiled on 12 October 2021. Kelsie Wills
Kelsie Thwaites ( ''née'' Wills; born 8 January 1993) is a New Zealand rugby union player. She previously represented New Zealand in Beach volleyball before switching to rugby. Volleyball career Thwaites completed an indoor volleyball scholarship in the United States, and played professionally in Paris. Thwaites and playing partner Shaunna Polley represented New Zealand at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. They were the nation's first women's beach volleyball team to compete at the Games. The pair won a bronze medal at the Ulsan Open in South Korea on the 2017 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour. Rugby career Thwaites made a switch to rugby union in 2019. Chyna Hohepa
Chyna Hohepa (born 15 December 1989) is a New Zealand rugby union and sevens player. She plays Lock for the Chiefs Manawa in the Super Rugby Aupiki competition, and for Waikato provincially. She has also represented New Zealand in sevens and touch. Rugby career Hohepa made her debut for Waikato in 2012. She was named in the Black Ferns sevens team for the Dubai Sevens, it was the first round of the inaugural 2012–13 Women's Sevens World Series. In 2019, Hohepa captained the Waikato women's sevens squad. She has also represented New Zealand in touch. On 1 May 2021, Hohepa represented Chiefs Manawa in their historic clash against the Blues women, it was the first-ever women's Super Rugby match in New Zealand. Chelsea Bremner
Chelsea Bremner (born 11 April 1995) is a New Zealand rugby union player. She plays for the Black Ferns internationally and was a member of their 2021 Rugby World Cup champion squad. She previously played for Matatū in 2022, but now plays for the Chiefs Manawa in the Super Rugby Aupiki competition. She represents Canterbury at a provincial level. Personal life Bremner is a school teacher at Hornby High School, she also coaches the boys' rugby team. She began her sporting career in netball, and only took up rugby in 2015. Charmaine Smith (rugby Union)
Charmaine Smith (born 15 November 1990) is a former New Zealand rugby union player. She was part of the Black Ferns 2017 Rugby World Cup champion side. She previously played for the Blues Women in the Super Rugby Aupiki competition before switching to Chiefs Manawa in 2023. Rugby career Smith debuted for New Zealand against Canada at Calgary in 2015. She was named in the Black Ferns squad for the 2017 Rugby World Cup in Ireland. She was part of the winning team of the 2019 Women's Rugby Super Series. Smith retired from playing rugby in 2020 for health reasons, and returned to her career as a sergeant in the New Zealand Police. Grace Houpapa-Barrett
Grace Houpapa-Barrett (born 25 July 1995) is a New Zealand rugby union player. She plays for the Black Ferns internationally and for Chiefs Manawa in the Super Rugby Aupiki competition. She also represents Waikato provincially in the Farah Palmer Cup. Rugby career 2014 & 2020 Houpapa-Barrett made her provincial debut for Waikato in 2014. Luka Connor
Luka Connor (born 24 September 1996) is a New Zealand rugby union player. She was part of the Black Ferns 2021 Rugby World Cup squad that won their sixth title. Santo Taumata (born 5 February 2003) is a New Zealand rugby union player. She plays for the Black Ferns internationally and was a member of their 2021 Rugby World Cup champion squad. Angel Mulu (born 21 November 1999) is a New Zealand rugby union player. She plays at Prop for the Black Ferns internationally and for Chiefs Manawa in the Super Rugby Aupiki competition.
