Chief Medical Officers (United Kingdom)
In the United Kingdom, a Chief Medical Officer (CMO) is the most senior government advisor on matter relating to health. There are four CMOs in the United Kingdom who are appointed to advise their respective governments: * His Majesty's Government ''(CMO for England and medical adviser to the United Kingdom government)'' * Scottish Government * Welsh Government * Northern Ireland Executive Each CMO is assisted by one or more Deputy Chief Medical Officers, and complemented by a Chief Nursing Officer. The Chief Medical Officer is a qualified medical doctor whose medical speciality traditionally was public health medicine, and whose work focused on the health of communities rather than health of individuals. John Charles (physician)
Sir John Alexander Charles (26 July 1893 – 6 April 1971) was the tenth Chief Medical Officer of the Home Office of the United Kingdom. Life Charles was the son of John Charles, a physician and JP who practised medicine in Stanley, County Durham. His mother was Margaret Dewar. Charles's early education was taken at St Bees School, and then the Royal Grammar School in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. In 1916, Charles qualified in medicine at Durham University College of Medicine. In 1925, Charles took a Diploma in Public Health at University of Cambridge. In 1947, Charles married Madeleine Frances, who was the eldest daughter of William Errington Hume (1879–1960), Professor Emeritus of Medicine in the Durham University, and had a son and daughter. Scottish Executive Health Department
The Health and Social Care Directorates are a group of directorates of the Scottish Government. They are responsible for NHS Scotland, as well as policies on the development and implementation of health and social care. The Chief Executive of NHS Scotland and Director-General of the Scottish Government's Health and Social Care Directorates is Caroline Lamb. There is a direct relationship between Ministers and the Directorates, but this relationship is not consistent across the Government as there is often no direct read across to Ministerial portfolios from DGs. Local Government Board For Scotland
The Local Government Board for Scotland was the body charged with overseeing local government, public health, housing and poor law of Scotland from 1894 to 1919. Establishment The board was established by the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1894. The new body took over the powers and duties of the Board of Supervision which had supervised poor law provision since 1845. The board had three ex officio members and three appointed members. The ex officio members were the Secretary for Scotland (who was the president of the board), the Solicitor General for Scotland and the Under-Secretary for Scotland. Of the three appointed members one was to be the vice-president of the board, the second a member of the Faculty of Advocates of not less than three years' standing, and the third a medical practitioner with a diploma in sanitary science or public health, or who had been the medical officer of a county or burgh for at least five years. Jeanelle De Gruchy
Dr Jeanelle Louise de Gruchy is a UK public health official. Dr de Gruchy has been serving as a Deputy Chief Medical Officer for England since 3 September 2021. She previously served as Director of Public Health (DPH) for Tameside in Greater Manchester and President (2018-2021) of the UK Association of Directors of Public Health (ADPH). As president, she published principles for local management of the SARS 2 epidemic (local outbreak plans) covering public health leadership, whole system, resourcing and effectiveness. She attended SAGE for the 58th meeting on 21st September 2020 which recommended a new response including a short 'circuit breaker' lockdown and subsequent meetings from December. Jonathan Van-Tam
Sir Jonathan Stafford Nguyen-Van-Tam (born 2 February 1964) is a British healthcare professional specialising in influenza, including its epidemiology, transmission, vaccinology, antiviral drugs and pandemic preparedness. After hospital work, he was involved variously as a university lecturer and within the pharmaceutical industry. Van-Tam became a Deputy Chief Medical Officer for England on 2 October 2017. He played a very significant part in the UK's response to the covid pandemic which started in 2020 as one of two deputies. Dame Jennifer Margaret Harries is a British public health physician who has been the chief executive of the UK Health Security Agency and head of NHS Test and Trace since April 2021. She was previously a regional director at Public Health England, and then Deputy Chief Medical Officer for England from June 2019 to April 2021. Georgina Margaret Radford (born 25 April 1955) is a British priest in the Church of England and a former public health physician. Since June 2019, she has been team vicar in the Dart and Avon Mission Community in South Brent, Devon, in the Diocese of Exeter. Having changed her career from the public physical and mental health provision, during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, she was initially drawn back into her traditional field as a doctor, but found that her new calling was particularly suited in ministering to spiritual needs when also considering the sudden wider physical health symptoms which could result in long-term psychological changes, and has contributed to advising on the church's response to the pandemic. Sir Christopher John MacRae Whitty (born 21 April 1966) is a British epidemiologist serving as Chief Medical Officer for England (CMO) and Chief Medical Adviser to the UK Government since 2019. He has also been Gresham Professor of Physic since 2018. Liam Donaldson
Sir Liam Joseph Donaldson (born 3 May 1949) is a British doctor. He was formerly the Chief Medical Officer for England, being the 15th occupant of the post since it was established in 1855. As such, he was principal advisor to the United Kingdom Government on health matters and one of the most senior officials in the National Health Service (NHS). In December 2009 it was announced that he planned to retire from this role in May 2010, although he said that, if the influenza pandemic should unexpectedly worsen, he would have postponed his retirement. Kenneth Calman
Sir Kenneth Charles Calman, HonFAcadMEd (born 25 December 1941) is a doctor and academic who formerly worked as a surgeon, oncologist and cancer researcher and held the position of Chief Medical Officer of Scotland, and then England. He was Warden and Vice-Chancellor of Durham University from 1998 to 2006 before becoming Chancellor of the University of Glasgow.
