The Confederate States Army, also called the Confederate Army or the Southern Army, was the military land force of the Confederate States of America (commonly referred to as the Confederacy) during the American Civil War (1861–1865), fighting against the United States forces to win the independence of the Southern states and uphold the institution of slavery. On February 28, 1861, the Provisional Confederate Congress established a provisional volunteer army and gave control over military operations and authority for mustering state forces and volunteers to the newly chosen Confederate president, Jefferson Davis. Davis was a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy, and colonel of a volunteer regiment during the Mexican–American War. Melancthon Smith (Confederate Officer)
Melancthon Smith (frequently spelled Melancton or Melanchton; April 15, 1829 – November 1, 1881) was a Colonel in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. A graduate of the United States Military Academy, he served with the artillery of the Army of Tennessee in the Western Theater. After the war he became a journalist. Francis Marion Walker (November 12, 1827 – July 22, 1864) was a Confederate States Army officer during the American Civil War (Civil War). He was killed while commanding a brigade at the Battle of Atlanta of July 22, 1864, one day before his commission as a brigadier general in the Confederate Army was delivered. Marcus Otho (; born Marcus Salvius Otho; 28 April 32 – 16 April 69) was the seventh Roman emperor, ruling for three months from 15 January to 16 April 69. He was the second emperor of the Year of the Four Emperors. A member of a noble Etruscan family, Otho was initially a friend and courtier of the young emperor Nero until he was effectively banished to the governorship of the remote province of Lusitania in 58 following his wife Poppaea Sabina's affair with Nero. The 27th Tennessee Infantry Regiment (also known as the "Twenty-seventh Tennessee") was an infantry formation in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War, and was successively commanded by Colonels C. H. Williams and A. W. Caldwell. The regiment was assigned to Maney's Brigade, Cheatham's Division, 1st Corps, Army of Tennessee, and on January 1, 1863, consolidated with the 1st (Field's) Tennessee Infantry Regiment. History The Twenty-seventh Tennessee was organized on September 10, 1861, at Camp Trenton, from new and existing companies of volunteer infantry. Its 833 men were from the counties of Benton, McNairy, Obion, Henderson, Decatur, Crockett, Weakley, and Carroll. 1st Tennessee Infantry Regiment
The 1st Tennessee Infantry Regiment (also known as the "First Tennessee") was an infantry regiment in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War, and was successively commanded by Colonels George Maney and Hume R. Field. History The Regiment was originally organized on the 9th of May in 1861. It was officially mustered into Confederate service on August 1st of the same year. George Maney, who commanded the Rock City Guards battalion which became companies A, B and C, was elected colonel for the first 90 days. After that, command passed to Hume Field. Confederate martyr Sam Davis joined the regiment as a scout, but he was later executed as a spy by Union forces despite his wearing a butternut Confederate uniform when he was captured. Brigadier-General George Earl Maney (August 24, 1826 – February 9, 1901) was an American soldier, politician, railroad executive and diplomat. He was a general in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War and a postbellum U.S. ambassador to Colombia, Bolivia, Uruguay, and Paraguay.
