Chiayi Art Museum
The Chiayi Art Museum () is an art museum in West District, Chiayi City, Taiwan. History The museum building was originally constructed in 1936 as a factory of the Chiayi branch of Taiwan Tobacco and Wine Monopoly Bureau during the Japanese rule of Taiwan. In November 2020, it was reopened as Chiayi Art Museum in an inaugurated ceremony by Mayor Huang Min-hui. On 27 January 2021, Eslite Bookstore opened a bookshop at the museum. The current director of the museum is Lai Yi-Hsin. Architecture The museum original factory building consisted of a main building and two warehouses. After it was turned into a museum, it consists of art spaces, library, shop, restaurant and garden. The museum was designed by M.H.Wang Architects and Associates and Studiobase Architects. Eslite Bookstore
Eslite Bookstore () is one of the largest retail bookstore chains in Taiwan. It also offers one of the largest selections of English-language publications and translation materials in Taiwan. Its headquarters is in Xinyi District, Taipei. Brief history Eslite was established in 1989 by Robert Wu Ching-yu. The first shop was located in Dunhua South Road, Daan District, Taipei, with a focus and emphasis on art and humanities-related books. Since then, the company has expanded and set up more shops and increased its range of titles on offer. Eslite Bookstore was the first to set up a 24-hour bookstore in Taiwan at its Dunhua store, attracting night-time readers. Eslite also expanded into retail, and opened up Eslite Mall. Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) is a railway operator in Taiwan. It is an agency of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, responsible for managing, maintaining, and running conventional passenger and freight railway services on 1097 km of track in Taiwan. Since Taiwan is heavily urbanised with a high population density, railways have played an important part in domestic transportation since the late 19th century. Huang Min-hui (; ) is a Taiwanese politician. She was a member of the Legislative Yuan from 1999 to 2005. Her tenure as vice chairperson of the Kuomintang (2008–16) overlapped with two terms as Mayor of Chiayi City (2005–14). Chiayi (, Taigi POJ: ''Ka-gī''; ), officially known as Chiayi City, is a city located in the plains of southwestern Taiwan. Formerly called ''Kagee'' during the late Qing dynasty and ''Kagi'' during the Japanese era (), its historical name is ''Tirosen''. History Early history First inhabited by the Hoanya aborigines, the region was named Tirosen (variants ''Tirocen'', ''Tiracen''). With the arrival of Han Chinese immigrants in southwestern Taiwan, the name evolved to become ''Tsulosan'' () in Hokkien. Eventually, Tsulosan was shortened to simply Tsulo. Taiwan Under Japanese Rule
The island of Taiwan, together with the Penghu Islands, became a dependency of Japan in 1895, when the Qing dynasty ceded Fujian-Taiwan Province in the Treaty of Shimonoseki after the Japanese victory in the First Sino-Japanese War. The short-lived Republic of Formosa resistance movement was suppressed by Japanese troops and quickly defeated in the Capitulation of Tainan, ending organized resistance to Japanese occupation and inaugurating five decades of Japanese rule over Taiwan. Its administrative capital was in Taihoku (Taipei) led by the Governor-General of Taiwan.
