Chetek is a city in Barron County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,221 at the 2010 census. The city is located partially within the Town of Chetek. History The original inhabitants of the area were the Ojibwa Indians, who referred to the area as ''zhedeg'', meaning pelicans. This was translated into various spellings, such as Sheetak, Shetak, Shetuk, Chetack, until the first post office was opened in 1872. The spelling was then standardized to "Chetek." In 1872, the Omaha Railroad began service to Chetek, the Knapp-Stout logging camp was established, and the first log schoolhouse was built. Chetek Southworth Municipal Airport , also known as Chetek Municipal–Southworth Airport, is a city-owned public-use airport located one nautical mile (2 km) southeast of the central business district of Chetek, a city in Barron County, Wisconsin, United States. Facilities and aircraft Chetek Southworth Municipal Airport covers an area of at an elevation of 1,055 feet (322 m) above mean sea level. It has two runways: 17/35 with a 3,401 x 60 ft (1,036 x 18 m) asphalt pavement and 7/25 with a 1,490 x 120 ft (454 x 37 m) turf surface. For the 12-month period ending July 23, 2020, the airport had 7,240 aircraft operations, an average of 19 per day: 99% general aviation and 1% air taxi. Chetek is a town in Barron County in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 1,644 at the 2010 census. The City of Chetek is located partially within the town. Geography The town of Chetek is in southeastern Barron County; the eastern border of the town is the border with Rusk County to the east. Lake Chetek is in the southwestern part of the town. The lake has a maximum depth of 22 feet and mean depth of 13 feet. The most common fish include Panfish, Largemouth Bass, Northern Pike, and Walleye with Smallmouth Bass also present. The city of Chetek occupies the western portion of the lake, while the town of Chetek covers the rest of the lake. Pokegama Lake and Mud Lake, two connected lakes forming a single arm of Lake Chetek, extend north towards the geographic center of the town. Barron County is a county located in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2020 census, the population was 46,711. Its county seat is Barron. The county was created in 1859 and later organized in 1874. History The county was created in 1859 as Dallas County (named after Vice President George M. Dallas), with the county seat located at Barron. It was renamed Barron County on March 4, 1869. The county took the name Barron in honor of Wisconsin lawyer and politician Henry D. Barron, who served as circuit judge of the Eleventh Judicial Circuit. Barron County was organized in 1874. In the late 1800s and early 1900s a community of Russian immigrants moved to Barron County.
