Chester P. Emunson
Chester P. Emunson (August 16, 1886 – May 9, 1956) was a politician in the State of Michigan. Biography Emunson was born in Hurley, Wisconsin. He was engaged in the printing business and was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. Career Emunson served in the Michigan State House of Representatives from 1933 to 1936. He unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic primary for U.S. Representative in 1936. In 1940 and 1942, he was also defeated when he ran for his former seat in the State House of Representatives. Hurley is a city in and the county seat of Iron County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,547 at the 2010 census. It is located directly across the Montreal River from Ironwood, Michigan. History Hurley is located on the Montreal River, the border between Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The city is on U.S. Highway 2 (US 2), and is the northern terminus of US 51, and is about south of Lake Superior. Hurley had its origins in the iron mining and lumbering booms of the 1880s. The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE; also often known as the Elks Lodge or simply The Elks) is an American fraternal order founded in 1868, originally as a social club in New York City. History The Elks began in 1868 as a social club for minstrel show performers, called the "Jolly Corks". It was established as a private club to elude New York City laws governing the opening hours of public taverns. The Elks borrowed rites and practices from Freemasonry. Membership Belief in a Supreme Being became a prerequisite for membership in 1892. The word "God" was substituted for Supreme Being in 1946.
