The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (abbreviated RMWB) is a specialized municipality in northeast Alberta, Canada. It is the second largest municipality in Alberta by area and is home to oil sand deposits known as the Athabasca oil sands. History The ''Municipality of Wood Buffalo'' was incorporated as a specialized municipality on April 1, 1995 as a result of the amalgamation of the City of Fort McMurray and Improvement District No. 143. These unique local governments are formed without the creation of special legislation, and typically allow for the coexistence of urban and rural areas within the jurisdiction of a single municipal government. 2021 Alberta Municipal Censuses
Alberta has provincial legislation allowing its municipalities to conduct municipal censuses. Municipalities choose to conduct their own censuses for multiple reasons such as to better inform municipal service planning and provision or to simply update their populations since the last federal census. Alberta began the year of 2021 with 345 municipalities, which decreased to 343 with the dissolutions of Improvement District No. 349 on May 1 and the Village of Hythe on July 1. Of these, the only two municipalities to conduct a municipal census in 2021 were the Town of Blackfalds and the Regional Municipality (RM) of Wood Buffalo. Wood Buffalo National Park
Wood Buffalo National Park is the largest National Parks of Canada, national park of Canada at . It is located in northeastern Alberta and the southern Northwest Territories. Larger in area than Switzerland, it is the second-largest national park in the world. The park was established in 1922 to protect the world's largest herd of free-roaming wood bison. Merger (politics)
A merger, consolidation or amalgamation, in a political or administrative sense, is the combination of two or more political or administrative entities, such as municipality, municipalities (in other words city, cities, towns, etc.), county, counties, districts, etc., into a single entity. This term is used when the process occurs within a sovereign entity. Unbalanced growth or outward expansion of one neighbor may necessitate an administrative decision to merge (see urban sprawl). In some cases, common perception of continuity may be a factor in prompting such a process (see conurbation).
