Cheat River

Via the Ohio River, the Cheat and Monongahela are part of the Mississippi River watershed. Coopers Rock State Forest
Coopers Rock State Forest is a state forest in Monongalia and Preston counties in the U.S. state of West Virginia. Its southern edge abuts Cheat Lake and the canyon section of Cheat River, a popular whitewater rafting river in the eastern United States. History Coopers Rock State Forest gets its name from a legend about a fugitive who hid from the law near what is now the overlook. A cooper by trade, he resumed making barrels at his new mountain hideout, selling them to people in nearby communities. He lived and worked in the forest for many years. Much of Coopers Rock was originally developed by projects of the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1936-1942. Albright, West Virginia
Albright is a town in central Preston County, West Virginia, United States, along the Cheat River. The population was 260 at the 2020 census. A former coal town, it is part of the Morgantown metropolitan area. History The town derives its name from David Albright, an early settler. In 1985, a mass flooding of the Cheat River wiped out most structures in the town. Located near Albright is the Virginia Furnace, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. Monongahela National Forest
The Monongahela National Forest is a national forest located in the Allegheny Mountains of eastern West Virginia, USA. It protects over of federally managed land within a proclamation boundary that includes much of the Potomac Highlands Region and portions of 10 counties. The Monongahela National Forest includes some major landform features such as the Allegheny Front and the western portion of the Ridge-and-valley Appalachians. Within the forest boundaries lie some of the highest mountain peaks in the state, including the highest, Spruce Knob (4,863 ft). Spruce Knob is also the highest point in the Allegheny Mountains.
